finshing up my build of a troy 13" alpha rail folding sights and an aim point... deciding on a barrel.
Theres sooooo much info out there i cant choose between between a DD/BCM CHF(i want it to last me more than forever) Lightweight or standard! do you guys have a specific reason why you chose one over the other? i kind of like the lightweight a little more because it saves weight but its not neccessarily 100% a "lightweight" build. Any suggestions???? EDIT: Im pretty set on a mid length 16" |

Hammer forged isn't a requirement for me. I could put the difference in price towards a second barrel IMO. Military issued rifles don't have hammer forged barrels FWIW.
I despise "Govt" profile barrels. There is no reason for the barrel to be thin under the hand guards and thick in front. Either go lightweight, medium contour, heavy or tapered (hard to find). 750 gas block seat is fine. DD tend to be a little less accurate and have a larger gas port from what I've seen and what I've had. |

If you're dead set on DD I would recommend these:

The Faxon barrel I use gets real good reviews:

Sorry- posted in wrong thread
90 bucks. Til midnight Monday. 1:7 twist but is melonited. I'd buy one and try it. Easy enough to swap out if you don't care for it and plenty of folks would buy a 85 dollar slightly used barrel. I think I'm going to grab one just to toss in the safe. I've got 4 lowers waiting for barrels https://www.primaryarms.com/Radical_Firearms_16_Mid_Length_Barrel_1_7_Twist_p/rf1617m.htm?utm_source=bronto&utm_medium=email&utm_content=SLOT_12&utm_campaign=15-05-Ad3_Mothers_Day_Sale |

I use DD barrels on all of my builds. I just put together my dream rifle which is a 16" middy with a LW DD CHF Chrome barrel...
Comparing LW to Gov profile, notice that they are identical behind the gas block with the gov only being thicker in front of the gas block. This adds weight where it will have the most negative impact on handling. The LW may heat up a bit faster but it will also cool faster. From what I've been able to read, the heating difference is negligible between the two (especially if you aren't doing back to back to back full auto mag dumps). Regarding their S2W profile, be aware that it is thicker/heavier than the gov profile AND it is NOT chrome line. Chrome lining increases reliability/durability but slightly reduces accuracy. For a non-magnified 16" I prefer chrome line. The S2W is really designed more for a "dmr/spr" type build. I would use something like that on an 18" or 20" build with a scope. |

Remember that gov profiles are an absolute waste of weight. Completely pointless.
Their genisis is based on a false drop gauge reading, nothing more. Gauge was hitting excess material at the gas port. You want a continuous taper barrel, period. Weight where it does something and not where it doesn't. IMHO, the DD link I sent above is perfect for you. And me when the funds allow. |
