Planning my AR build... So far I've decided upon DD for my upper and lower, Giessele SSA-E trigger, Magpul Alum enhanced trigger guard, and Magpul MOE for the stock and grip.

Concerning  everything forward of the upper, that has yet to be determined. I know I want either a 14.5" or 16" mid-length barrel, and a 12 to 14 inch free float hand guard. I had a Midwest SS Gen 2 on my Rock River build, but I'm not sure how I felt about the barrel nut needing to be replaced. It had an excellent finish and looked great, but modifying the host weapon is concerning for two reasons: unknown metallurgical quality of the barrel nut, and simply the fact you have to monkey with the rifle in order to fit it.

What free floats do you guys recommend? I want something with: a durable finish, a sleek good look to it, lightweight, and durable as heck. I'm a "one rifle, but it's a damn good one" type of person so I want to do this right the first time

I just don't like the design, to be honest. Their slim rail is just a quad rail with keymod holes instead of rails. IMO, keymod hand guards should be cylindrical or at least somewhat so, I thought the whole point of them was to offer a comfortable grip???

I wouldn't worry in the least about the quality of an MI barrel nut.  It's likely better than what comes on many rifles stock.

I don't know if they tickle your fancy, but you might look at the 2A rails.  They are impressive looking.  HERE

Are you looking for one that uses a stock nut?  There are several good ones out there, but it's much easier to find one using a proprietary nut.

Modular rail?  M-LOK?  Full Pic rail?

Diamond head vrst
utg pro ss keymod

Both under 200$ , both comfortable and durable. Barrel nuts are steel, good retention. Utg pro is very light, I got the 15 inch for 127 at exile machine . Unless your just dying to spend money then get a kmr like everyone else :)

Imho rails that use the standard barrel nut kinda suck. Usually it's a set screw affair, I'd be more concerned about that then the metallurgy of the steel.

I just switched from a MI 13" G2ss to a Giessele MK8 and it is great

DD MFR 12.0 might be something to consider. Same free float modular they use on the DDM4V7.  Railed only on the top.  You add 3" Picatinny rails only where actually needed. Slim.  Smooth. Strong.

If I understand you correctly, you are going to build your own upper but do not want to change the barrel nut out from the standard offering ?

May be hard to do since most slim design rails are going to have their own proprietary system.

That said most proprietary barrel nuts are of very high quality.

This.  If installing the barrel anyway, it makes sense to use the strongest nut with the most secure attachment to both the upper and the rail.  Most proprietary barrel nuts are stronger than the stock nut.  They tend to support the rail better, have multiple attachment points to the rail and do not require the gas tube to pass through them.  Thus, they do not have to be timed or clocked to the tube and can be torqued consistently.  Simply stated:  you get a stronger, more secure attachment of the rail to the upper receiver.

What do you think of the MI Gen 2 SS system? Good enough to put on a DD rifle??

I have one rifle with the MI SSK- Keymod Rail. A solid rail system that has a good barrel nut design.
It is very similar to the Gen 2 SS system.

After the nut is installed and timed the barrel slides over a knurled section and then is secured with two clamp screws. BOTH the knurled area and the screws will receive loctite which is included.

I initially installed the rail and screws dry to confirm function with a couple of mags at my range just in case I need access to th gas block. When I was satisfied I then removed the rail and finalized the install with the loctite and fastened everything down.

Here's a picture of the barrel nut here

Hodge Defense/MEGA teamed up to make the exact rail you are talking about.

13.58" long
Light weight as it can be, and still be in the "Durable" camp (I don't know the exact weight, but probably 9-13oz, including barrel nut)
Rail is 7075 if you buy from MEGA, AlLi if you buy from Hodge Defense (Al Li is stronger/more rigid/lighter/more corrosion resistant than 7075 T-651 in every way)
Barrel nut is a good grade of Ti. I do not know the exact grade, but it's not the cheap stuff that is sold simply because "Titanium!".
It's the slimmest rail I know of.

I really like the EMR we have (wife's rifle, a purple one). I'm going to grab a 13" or 15" in black for another project I'm working on. They are lightweight, well made, and affordable.
