So I have been searching around today looking for information about using irons only on a extended free float rail. I have heard that rails will wobble and cause your aim to be off or are not strong enough to run just back up sights. I am considering the kmr or the nsr maybe a geissele.

maybe wobble was a bad word choice, maybe bend the sight plane so shooting is slightly skewed? maybe that has more to do with using a sling as a steadying device. you read something about a midwest rail on the internet didn't you. don't overthink it, and don't go with an ultralightweight and you will be fine. purchase a decent set of sights and it is a non issue. |
| Look for a rail with anti-rotation tabs and with a proprietary rather than milspec barrel nut. Ask the maunfacturer if the tabs and your upper are compatible. Some uppers are not milspec where the tabs will fit. Most are. The proprietary nuts are usually longer, fit the tube tightl,y and have multiple attachment fasteners. These are super strong. My Daniell Defense MFR 12.0 is that way. So are many others, so I don't single it out. I run an optic, but would not hesitate to use that free float rail with irons only. My back up sights always are dead on for my zero whenever I test them. |
| In my experience the 13" troy alpha rail shifted and the 13" older MI rail shifted with pressure up and sideways. I'm quite concerned with this as well and I heard the BCM KMR and the new MI keymod/ mlok rails do not have any shift. I'm not willing to spend any money to test either. Can anybody confirm the KMR rail being solid? I have a dissipator too and I think they make a great idea for a longer sight radius on a midlength gas system. |

Naturally, there will be some variations depending upon the quality/rigidity of the free-float rail. You're also going to have variations in your sight radius depending upon the length of the free-float rail. The sight radius of a 20" A2 upper with the standard front sight base is approximately 20". For comparison, the sight radius of one of my Noveske builds using a 20" Noveske barrel, a 13.2" LaRue handguard and KAC BUIS is approximately 18.5". 
As an example of the accuracy obtainable with the BUIS on the Noveske build described above, the pic below shows a 10-shot group fired at a distance of 50 yards when I was zeroing the BUIS.
