How many of you serious shooters out there that actually run their guns hard and shoot A LOT use extra power buffer springs for their 14.5 mid length ar's? I have always stuck with a standard mil-spec carbine spring and then changed buffer weight if need be but I am wondering if any of you out there use like a CS buffer spring or the JP tuned buffer spring?

I may not fit your criteria, but I shoot my fair share.

Of the 4 14.5s I have, 2 are midlength, and 2 are carbine.  There is a Sprinco Blue in 3, and a Wolf X Power in one of the carbines.  I have H2s in the carbines, and H buffers in the middys.  I discovered I can not run Tula in the middys with this set-up, which is fine, I no longer have any left.  I can run PMC Bronze reliably, and that is about the weakest ammo I have left in my stash.

This is all relative to your barrel maker, however.  Some barrels have larger gas ports, etc.

I run Wolff XP action springs in all of my AR's.

Thanks for the response.

What would the difference be between a jp tuned carbine buffer spring and the sprinco blue spring?

anyone know the difference?

A stronger spring isn't always better.  Remember that for every action there is a reaction.  The stronger spring will dampen recoil more but will also slam the bolt forward faster and make it hit harder which can lead to jams and be harder on the bolt and other components.  A semi-auto pistol has the same issues, has to be tuned just right for the ammo being used.  I tend to lean away from too strong a recoil spring, not saying I don't like a little more spring tension just don't get too much.  I got a spring from ASA that is stiffer than my other AR-15 recoil springs but not way stiffer.  The heavy buffer is probably a better solution to dampening recoil.  Just my thoughts.

Agreed, plus a stiffer spring makes charging the weapon tougher. Going from a std to XP I was surprised by how much more force was required. IMO there are better ways to dampen recoil and/or increase reliability.

Standard "power" springs and H2 buffers, call it done.

Ok cool thats the way I was thinking as well. I was thinking of running an H2 buffer.

I've been running a jp tuned spring in my vltor a5 system with standard buffer. I've shot guns with the Wolff spring and felt it was a bit too overpowered. The jp seems ever so slightly stronger and not overkill. Bonus is that it's polished and is about as non twangy as you can get without cramming some $100 hydraulic gizmo in your buffer tube.

Nice..maybe I will try the jp spring and h2 buffer. Do you think using a JP spring will put EXTRA wear on the bolt?

Don't know if this helps but I recently experimented with H2 & H3 buffers in my 6920's in combination w/both the std factory buffer springs & Wolff Extra Power buffer spring.
I found the best combination for me was the H3/Wolff. H3/std was a big step back in controllability. H2/Wolff & H3/Wolff were about the same when shooting weaker PMC .223 but rapid-fire controllability was better w/the H3/Wolff when shooting full-power 5.56.
