Only you know the application you use your rifle in.

It would help to know what type of shooting you will be doing and what you expect to be able to do with your rifle.

Thanks for the reply. Just plinking, cannot afford to get it hot. I just want less plastic and saw some hand guards made out of al at a gun show today and thought they looked a little more sturdier for lack of a better word. Thanks -John

Standard hand guards serve our troops just fine.  You can buy rail sections to attach to your hand guards for a light.  Next step to me is go with Magpul for $40.  I prefer them for both looks and features.  Next is drop in aluminum hand guards starting at around $100.  Finally is free float. Don't buy cheap chinese crap off Amazon and expect anyone to have any sympathy when they don't fit well.
