They definitely smooth out the action. Love mine

Worked as advertised in my JP CTR-02, smooth and no sound from the tube. However, I didn't have any problems with using grease on standard buffer spring to keep it quiet so the captured spring is just another way to solve the noisy spring in the tube

Using one on a carbine with an Adams Arms piston set-up and a Magpul BAD lever and no issues. It does feel a little smoother.

Used one in a couple of different builds. I have noticed that one some, depending on your gas system, it won't properly cycle on 55gr. Gotta step up to 62gr for a little more bang. I did notice that it is sooo much smother to charge the rifle, as well as being quieter. And it may just be me, but I'd swear the recoil feels softer. For the cycling issue, JP makes replacement springs with different weights, haven't tried them, but others have had luck using them to dial in their gun.  Overall, if you're doing a high end build, and looking to get all you can from it, then it makes sense to get one, otherwise, it's an expensive luxury item.

I have two.
One in a pistol build. Since I have no padding on the buffer tube for the pistol I rest my cheek on the bare tube.
Standard spring and buffer would nearly jarr my teeth out.
The captured spring is so much quieter.
The only issue was failure to lock back the bolt carrier on  the last shot.
That went away after a few mags were shot.

I put one in my first .308 maten project without ever using  anything else. When I fired the gun I thought it didn't cycle, so I pulled back the charging handle to find a chambered round. Its that smooth.

Love mine. Absolutely worth the money. It changes the entire feel of the gun.

Update:
Well I broke down and ordered one. Wow, what a difference. No more twang and springs moving. Didn't even know I had a buffer spring in there. Definitely worth the money.
