I'm starting this discussion based on a post I recently read by another member here.
The comment was that getting an accurate barrel from a mid tier barrel was like winning the lottery. Ok that got me thinking. I see on here everyone talk about how much they like their DD barrels and their BCM's and FN's. Personally I have owned 2 barrels. A RRA 16"mid HBAR and a Centurion 16"mid thats not gov profile or hbar but something in between. Both of these barrels can out shoot me easily. I'v put up several 5 shot groups under an inch and a few 10 shot groups right over it with the Centurion. Does that make me lucky? Does luck really play that much of a role in getting a decent, accurate barrel in a mil spec type format or have the barrel makers reached a point that they can turn out a consistently accurate product? |

I don't quite understand the comment made about mid-tier barrels. But I can assure you it doesn't apply to you.
First of all, RRA is known to produce some of the most accurate (although usually heavy) barrels you can get with a "stock" AR. And I'm sure they make others but the Centurion barrels I've been seeing for sale lately are actually FN CHF barrels anyway. People are enamored with the DD and FN CHF's because of their reputation. I feel sure there are some bragging rights thrown in there as well, but both companies are known to consistently put out accurate, long-lasting barrels. And from my limited research it is not a gimmick....the CHF barrel will outlast a standard barrel. Full disclosure-- I bought an FN CHF barrel myself, but have yet to find the time to test it. |
| Well, I have found that most if not all barrels will outshoot the shooter. Now you can get a lemon and we have all seen examples of that here but for the most part they are all pretty accurate. I went with a Model 1 sales (ER Shaw) barrel when building my 300BLK because it had everything I wanted on it and it was the cheapest. It will give me 2 to 3 " groups at 300 yards with irons, I haven't scoped it yet. I might like the quality, reputation, and looks of the higher priced stuff, but I'm not willing to pay that much. Maybe I'm just cheap, I don't know, or maybe I just don't want to part with my hard earned money just for a fancy name. Ok, I'm cheap. But I still get to buy all my toys and keep money in my pocket. |
