By no means do I consider myself an expert which is why I have questions.

One of my AR15's is a basic M&P Sport.  Nothing fancy.  However I would like to replace the upper receiver to accommodate a dust cover and forward assist.

As far as which is best, I'm clueless.  The lower would still be just the M&P.

Any helpful information would be appreciated.

"Best" is relative term indexed by what your budget or price range is.
You could start with billet uppers for $300-400
move down to high quality forges like Vltor MURS for $200-150
work your way further down to Anderson A3 forged for $90-100
or some "no name" blem for $75.
all of which have a FAs and dust covers.

What's your budget.

You could buy a stripped upper receiver and parts kit then swap all your parts over

Stripped upper

Or you could buy a complete upper that is likely better than your M&P Sport and sell your upper and be out nearly the same amount. Right now that one isnt on sale, but they get as low as $400 for the hammer forged barrels or even $300 for the basic chrome lined barrels. With the second link you would also have a spare BCG you could keep or sell.
