I have an AR15 Performance 6.8 upper, excellent quality and very accurate. I'm not sure they are making and selling complete uppers now. I have a barrel on order from them now.

how about in the $800 range for good quality (i.e. accurate)?  i ordered from ARP over 6 months ago and word is, i might be half way through my wait.  i want it NOW!

looking for ARP or Bison or something comparable.  this will be my youngest first deer killer...dropping it on a RRA lower.

I was looking at the $550 range because I'm only 15 and building my first ar, so I don't have a whole lot of money to throw around. But I have been looking at the bison uppers.

15 and building your first AR; that's awesome brother. There are some options for a complete upper in that price range but if you are able to save a little more and pick up an ARP or Bison as stated above, you will have done well. You have decided on the 68 for hunting reasons I assume so I will put in my 2 cents after hunting with this calber for several years and having been able to try out several different uppers in this caliber.

I've been using the 68 for deer and hogs exclusively for about 5 years now and hunt hogs with my 68 three to four times a week.  The 68 is a very effective round on TX White-Tail and pigs, however you will be limited to around 300 yards or so for a humane kill.  Most 6.8 ammo is geared towards hunting and there are several great offerings to pick from. Silver State Armory has a great line up, with soft points for deer like the 110 grain Sierra Pro Hunter, which many shooters in the 68 game will agree is a very accurate round, and solid copper rounds like the 85 grain and 95 grain Barnes TSX bullets that are devastating on pigs. We don't have a cheap plinking round just yet but word is that we may soon. Take into consideration that ammo for the 6.8 SPC is a bit difficult to find right now and the hunting rounds are usually $1 to $2 a piece; which is about on par when you think of other dedicated hunting rounds of other calibers.

When looking for an upper, try to find one that has the better specs for this round. You'll want a barrel chambered in 6.8 SPC II or ARP's 6.8x43. Do not get something chambered in 6.8 SAAMI (SPC I) as this is an outdated chamber that may show pressure problems and one which is not approved for most of the good hunting ammo offerings. A 1/11, or 1/11.25 in ARP's case, is preferred over a barrel with a 1/10 twist. A midlength gas system would be a better choice over a carbine length gas system. Barrel length doesn't matter too much as a longer barrel doesn't provide a heck of a lot more performance, so a 16" or 18" would be ideal.

Keep an eye out here on the Equipment Exchange as there are good deals to be had now and again. Also take a look at Palmetto State Armory's offerings; they make a decent 68 and they go on sale often. Although my day to day rifle is an ARP (AR15 Performance) I have a couple of PSA's uppers and they are good shooters.  Click THIS LINK to check out PSA's upper that is in stock. You'll need a complete bolt carrier group and charging handle to finish off most uppers so keep that in mind on added price.

Keep us updated in this thread and ask any questions you have. We're all here to help. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your build and hearing how she shoots. Good luck!

Thanks for all the information, most hunting will be done at 100 to 200 yards on manly hogs. I have an ar in 5.56 but its a lot harder to kill hogs with. I've narrowed my chooses down to 3 upper now. My build will be pretty slow, I only have a stripped lower right now. Once I start getting stuff then ill add pictures of it.

I like YHM and consider them good quality so you could look at this - in stock $720 here.

Does YHM still use a funky thread pitch for the muzzle on their 6.8s?  The standard is 5/8"x24, for 6.5, 6.8, 7.62.
