a guy from another forum is offering to me a new aero upper with sota barrel for $550 shipped

that's just about what my budget will allow

but i know nothing about aero and sota except i read that an aero upper wouldn't fit somebody's lower without filing it down

anyone have experience with the above?

thanx

I think the Aero Precision uppers are the most popular upper right now that people can get, and I haven't read a single negative thing about them.  I juts mated a stripped Aero upper, with a stripped lower made by a different company over a decade ago - and it fits just fine, I don't see anything not lining up right and the pivot and takedown holes line up on both just fine.  Don't get had on the Aero Upper, if you are patient and watching their store, you can get a stripped upper for $104 shipped still.

$550 is pretty steep for just an upper and stripped barrel unless it comes with other items,
you can find an upper for just over $100 bucks at a lot of places, and you can find a nice BCM or DD barrel for $2-300

Bought two aero uppers weeks ago and so far I test fitted to a Bushmaster made in 98, a recent production colt m4 and a new Franklin Armory and they all fit perfect. Got the uppers for 110 shipped and my buddy got a DD LW 16 from DD for under three. Shop around parts are out there just have to sign up for alerts, keep pages bookmarked and check your emails. Help give the middle finger to price gouging resellers

I haven't had any issues with my aero upper.  $550 seems pretty steep unless that is a fully built upper with a decent hand guard.  If you've got time prices will come back down. Aero's uppers use to be $69.

Just got a stripped upper direct from Aero for 101.09 shipped to my door.

Picked it up tonight and dropped it on my lower. Fits like a glove, no perceivable slop up/down or side/side. Good fit.

I don't know of the barrel mfg you listed but you can get a new Krieger barrel for 420. I'd find it hard to believe that SOTA barrels are on the same level as Krieger.

The most expensive SOTA barrel I saw (looked briefly) was 184.00 - so it appears 2x what you could do on your own.

If that includes the BCG, then it's a good deal.  But if no BCG, then it's nothing spectacular.

A completed upper is just about 20-25 more in parts depending on where you get the parts.
Just make sure you are getting a deal - what kind of handguards (free float or drop in?)?  how many rounds through the barrel?  bolt carrier group?)  Sights included?  If its already assembled then you need to compare it to other uppers already on the market like in the EE section here and elsewhere.

For reference, Bravo Company is selling new chrome lined 16" uppers with a front sight gas block, no handgurd and no bolt carrier group for $459. Not always in stock, but they come and go - much more frequently than they did a few months ago.  So - for $550 - it should be a barrel you want, or a used one you will accept, and conside if it has a bcg, handguards and sights.
