I cant make up my mind between the str or the acs-l. currently have a ctr on one rifle and looking for something for my 18" build.

The ACS has more storage than the STR, and it looks like the cheek rest section is pretty much identical (I really like that feature).

I've never owned an ACS-L but it did have a couple of ACS as well as STR. I did not like the ACS due to it being slightly longer when fully collapsed and the QD sling point did not inspire confidence in me though I have no empirical data to back that up. I love the STR though. I've replaced almost all my CTRs with them (still have the 22LR AR left).

What profile is the 18" barrel? What kind of handguard does the rifle have? I ask because you could come at this problem by selecting the stock that will best balance out the rifle overall. I've got an AR with Rainier Arms 16" heavy barrel and that rifle has a UBR which balances it out perfectly.

the build is a 18" rainier match barrel, 15" troy alpha rail.

If it were mine, I'd be putting a UBR on that build to balance out the barrel and to a less degree the rail. I'm running 16" RA barrels and for me, the UBR balances them out well. If I couldn't swing the price on the UBR, I'd get the next heaviest stock I could (ACS? Maybe a Vltor?).

I like the length of the ACS-L.  I especially like it on my SBR, it gives me the length I've always wanted.  The 1.5 length that was never there, or that 2.5 that was never there.  I always wanted the in between adjustment, and now I have it.  Kind of.

Check out the ergo f93 for that scenario.   Very good feeling stock.   No storage though.

I would say an STR but you should be OK with the ACS.
