Building my first AR (5.56) and I am hoping to get some advice on upper assemblies. Assuming stock level s get back to normal, can you recommend what uppers I should consider and from where?
I want to go with a 16" barrel. An M4 style (if that makes sense). Hoping to stay in the $600 or lower range unless I should consider spending more. I've got lots to learn so I'm open for all the advice I can get. This will be for home defense, range fun and perhaps some matches as I get "the bug". ;-) Thanks! |

First, buy quality. If that means you have to stretch your budget a bit or save some more ducats, then do so. You'll be glad you did.
Sounds like you want a standard M4. Not having a rail system will save you some money right off the bat. A BCM or similar quality M4 upper without a rail system will come in at well under $600. ETA: Link provided. I like BCM, great CS, competitive prices, lots of options. The only issue is that it can be difficult to get what you want as their stock fluctuates a lot. There are plenty of other good outfits to choose from but as you alluded to, everyone seems to be out of everything. Bravo Company USA M4 Style Uppers |

PSA uppers with cold hammer forged barrels = quality! They have FN CHF barrels and are mil-spec. I paid $359.99 w/ free shipping 3 weeks ago for a 16" midlength CHF upper from PSA. I was looking to go with BCM, but they are a little more expensive and never in stock. I also have a Spikes Upper which is also a quality, mil-spec upper.

Probably have some of my terminology wrong. I do want a rail system (If I understand correctly). Alaska511's AR in this thread is the direction I want to head in.
Also, should I be looking for an upper with a bolt carrier group? If not, what bolt carrier group should I be considering? |
