I got a great deal on a upper about a year ago that had a factory barrel nut and pinned 14.5 barrel. So I sought out a rail system that attaches to the factory barrel nut. I ended up going with the rainier arms evolution. I love it, solid, lightweight, looks good. Zero complaints.
Fast forward to today, I have an inbound 18" 6.8 (thank you PSA) and am looking for a longer rail, something in the 15" realm. Rainier doesn't make one that long, but Samson has their version available, I also see the Troy alpha. I like the fact that both use s factory barrel nut for mounting rather than some proprietary mount. I'm looking for feedback on either of the 15" version. I already have a Rainer or two, so I get how the Samson works/handles, and the Troy feels close to the same. Is there any drawbacks to the Troy? There is zero heat transfer with my rainier. I'd assume the Samson is similar, but not sure if the Troy has the fancy bushing to stop heat transfer. I'd also be open to other ideas as well. I don't really like the quad rails anymore, but these work great because I can add rails as needed. I will be chopping the FSB. So clearance shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for any insight. |
| Not sure if Samson uses helicoils in their "pinch" design, but they may give way if you take it off more than a few times. The Troy has a wedge-push design that is very solid. It's a good rail, I have Troy Alphas on both my ARs and like them more than any other I've tried. |
| i really like my troy alpha rail, the flip up front site is built into top rail system and sits flush when depressed.. it's lightweight and smooth, too... i know it mounts different than the samson rail, and i really don't know if that makes much difference, but no complaints about my troy rail at all... |

Is your barrel a rifle length or middy GS? If it's rifle length you could go with the Samson Evolution extended rifle length and leave it. You could also swap in a flip up front sight.
I'm probably going to try that next since the other rifle has a 13" TRX-E. I've got an 18" rifle length upper w/flip up and the ancient Oly and quad rail needs to go! |

It's a mid gas.
I guess the biggest question I have is about heat transfer on the Troy. The rainier/Samson has zero. The YHM I have on my pistol build gets hot after 10 rounds. I'd like to avoid that. It seems that the mount on the troy is pretty solid, and it looks like I'd be happy either way. I just don't want a hot handguard, I find myself not shooting my pistol because of the handguard an it's heat retention/transfer. |
