Hey gang,
I'm not very familiar with muzzle devices. So far my AR's have came with A2s, and I've just left them alone.   I have a 9mm that I want to put a different muzzle brake on, but the barrel is threaded 1/2x36.  There are limited options as far as off the shelf muzzle brakes.

My question is - could a competent machinist take just about any muzzle brake and re tap it for 1/2x36 and bore it out to 9mm? Does it matter what the specific muzzle brake is, and how much metal there is to work with? Is there something I'm missing that makes this a horrible idea? I'm neither a machinist or gunsmith, so give me a crash course on the subject please

re-tap it, no.

Ream it, press in a bushing and tap threads in the new bushing, yes.

Possibly weld up the old threads, ream to minor diamter, and tap threads in the new metal, yes.

The already-cut threads would interfere with cutting new threads (too much metal is already missing), so the old threads need to removed and new metal put into place somehow before it could be rethreaded.

Reaming the main bore to pass 9mm would be no problem.  I've adapted several AR-15 brakes for 7.62x39 just by reaming them out some, and 9mm is just a little wider than that.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks!
