I am going to buy a Colt carbine upper assembly and put it on a new receiver I have lying around.
I like the A2 buttstocks on my Colt rifle and AR-10. Even though I have telescoping stocks on my other carbines, I like the fixed standard A2 stocks on the rifles. I have long arms and I never use the telescoping stocks in their shortest setting. I usually set tham at 12 inches. (ETA: The shortest I can shoot is about 10" but that isn't comfortable because of my arm length.) So, I'm thinking an A1 might be good for me. Any info on whether I am nuts and/or where I can buy a good A1 assembly kit would be appreciated. Thanks for any info. ETA: It doesn't have to be the classic A1 in looks but I'd like a fixed stock and I'm thinking that 12" length would be good for me in a carbine. I just don't use the telescoping function on the other carbines I have. They are basically fixed stocks for all intents and purposes. Maybe this one? http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?products_id=373 With this buffer? http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?cPath=19_29&products_id=297 Final ETA: I'm thinking this upper. http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/CO6940CK.aspx |
Your not crazy If You like the stock in the link and the length get it. For carbines I prefer a shorter stock to go with the carbine look. I have an ACE Entry stock on mine with a 1" spacer/extension. (about 9.25" now)I like it a lot, I think its perfect for that rifle. But my dad thinks its too short.
ACE has a rifle length stock too which is nice. You need to buy the buffer tube separately though. |

You will (almost certainly) have trouble getting a natural head position in prone or sitting on the ground. Unless you have your optics quite far forward (or it's a red dot).
This is probably not much of a concern for you as this is not your only rifle and I assume you are building it for faster shooting. |

Oh shit!! I didn't even notice that. Thanks for the head's up. I may have to contact the company and see if it is ok to use with a carbine. It seems like it is but I'm confused now. |

I use A1 stocks on all my lowers, except for one which has an A2. An A1 stock on a 16" mid length upper is a VERY smooth shooting rifle. |

FYI that stock is twice as heavy as the old M16A1 stock (12 oz vs. 6 oz). I bought one to try out with my lightweight 16" and didn't like the heavy stock in the back, un-balanced the carbine for no reason. |

Ok guys, I see I can use that type of stock on the carbine gas system but I think I'll start looking at other options (If it is that heavy bravo5two, I don't think I will like it too much even though the Colt 6940 isn't a lightweight upper from what I have read.)
I want an A1 type of fixed stock though because the typical telescoping stock is WAY too short for me when collapsed much at all. I simply don't need that type of stock. I'm an old guy who won't be doing any entries and will use the gun outdoors or at gun ranges only. Something 10" or more stock length would be ok IMHO for me. Ten inches being the bare minimum. I liked the Sully stock but it is too short. Wish they made a longer one. Any suggestions? I was hoping for something a bit more tacticool than the traditional A1. Why?........no reason just being anal. But if that's how you guys think I should go (traditional A1 stock) then that's how I will go. Thanks for any info. ETA: Oh, I ordered the 6940 upper last night. It was the one I linked to in my initial post. |

both of my game guns have a A1 M16 stock with rounded butt pad... for tacticool do what I did, add an American Flag decal to the stock for Ft Benning 3 gun matches....about as tacticool as an old fart can get...
the classiest stocks during the 6 years I've shot Ft Benning were the two pink guns carried to promote breast cancer awareness...couple of Rangers... |
