| I`m looking to change the barrel on my Colt Hbar. I`m going from Hbar to a Colt 20" A2 barrel. Does headspace need to be checked? |

I would check it. Despite everyone saying they aren't usually out, why risk blowing up your rifle? If you have the aptitude to change the barrels, checking headspace shouldn't be any harder. And if the headspace checks a no-go, then what? From what I have read, try another bolt. If that doesn't work, chances are the barrel and/or barrel extension is worn out or out of spec. |

Changing the barrel on an AR does not change the headspace for that barrel, which is determined by the bolt, and chambered barrel with barrel extension. It's generally not adjustable, although too-short headspace could be lengthened with a finish reamer. Nothing wrong with checking it, but rarely is it ever required, and only thing you can do if it's too long is try a different bolt and hope. |

Changing the barrel on an AR does not change the headspace for that barrel, which is determined by the bolt, and chambered barrel with barrel extension... That doesn't make any sense. If headspace is determined by the bolt, and the barrel, and the barrel extension, if you change any one of those components, you have most likely altered headspace. It may still be within spec, but it doesn't mean you haven't changed it. |

The receiver plays no part in headspace in an AR - just how the bolt fits with a particular barrel/bolt combo. Gauges are almost always unnecessary... but no, it never hurts to check. |
