I just ordered a milspec CTR and a commercial CTR stock.  It looks like the milspec version comes with w .30" buttpad and the commercial comes with a thicker one (0.55"?).  Is there any reason why you can't swap buttpads between the two?

The commercial stock's has a spacer sandwiched between the buttpad & stock body because most commercial receiver extensions are slanted on the end/and or longer than mil-spec extensions.

But if you don't have the slant, and there's nothing interfering with it is there any reason why you can't put the thinner pad on the commercial version, or the thicker one on the milspec?

A picture is worth, well you know . . .

Not a CTR, but a MOE (same dimensions) on a commercial Bushmaster buffer tube.

The slant is not so much a factor, as the rear of the stock also has some slant to it, it's just longer. Long enough to make the extra pad thickness necessary.

FWIW, though, the MOE with the thick buttpad is only marginally longer than the original stock that was on it.

Unless you're trying to shave off that extra 1/8" or so, it's not a problem.

If you put on the thinner pad, it just won't collapse far enough to lock (and it could damage the pad). It won't be any shorter.

The only way I could see getting it any shorter would be to take the thinner pad and make a cutout so the end of the tube could go flush. If done neatly it might look cool, but not worth the effort IMHO.

They also made a butt plate that's 0.70 in thick.  I ordered that one as a replacement for the stock butt plate on my MOE CTR.
