This is my first build and I am thinking of going with a MEGA-MTS-220 Carbine length Monolithic upper with the MTS-P200 Adams Carbine gas system. I'm going to be using a 14.5 inch barrel haven't decided by who yet and wanted to know if the assembly of this is straight forward? I'm a little nervous getting about $1100 in upper parts and not ever had put one together. Also having seen Noveske uppers and LMT uppers complete for around that price.

it's really your build, if thats the route you want to take then go for it! I have never used mega but read great things about them. I personally would build cheaper, go with an AERO mono and spend half the money and put the rest into optics and ammo. what ever way you choose welcome to the black rifle world, enjoy the sight and read around on here, you will learn a ton! and most importantly.....post pix when its done!

If this is what you want I'd go for it. Concerning any assembly issues that may or may no arise, rest assured that they can all be addressed right here.

Get what you want or you'll be second guessing yourself and be disappointed also. We're here to help.

My first build was with a Mega Mono upper rifle length gen 1.

I am currently building my second build with a Mega Mono upper mid length gen 2.

I love Mega products, especially their Mono upper.  The Mega upper and lower fit together perfectly.  I really like the improvements they made with the gen 2.  It is much lighter and has 5 quick detach locations for rings.  I have heard some people say they could not pin a low profile gas block under a Mega mono upper but I had no problems with it.  You just have but the upper in a vice, use some tape so you don't mess up the finish, and most make sure to take your time.

I have not used their mono upper with a piston build but I say go for it and don't look back.  It may be intimidating but just remember you have thousands of fellow arfcommers to help you along if you get stuck.   Your going to be satisfied.

I will send you some pics when I get my barrel installed.  It should be next week sometime.

Rick,

Mega is straight forward.  take your time and it will be fine.

Who is going to pin your comp for you on that 14.5 or are you going the NFA route with it?

I am not sure about the OP, but if I don't do it myself, I will probably send it to Rainier Arms.

I was hoping I could pin the comp myself during the build, I am a good welder. I am going to pick up my lower tomorrow, should be at my FFL by then. Going to order the upper parts this weekend or at least some of them. I was thinking of going with a Barrel from Black Hole Weaponry. I have talked to a few people and they have sworn by them as being very good, but have been looking at Noveske.

I have a Mega Monolithic upper on my SBR. It was very simple to assemble with a Noveske barrel and  lo-pro gasblock, but I don't know if anything is different with the piston assembly. FANTASTIC upper, though. Extremely well made and very light for a Mono.

What kind of welder are you plan on using?  That is one the one thing I am not sure about.  I can weld pretty good, but not as good as my father; he did it as a profession for over 25 years.  I was going to let him do it, but we don't really have access to a TIG.

Why does everyone want a piston for their first ar?

Its not my first AR, its my first time building one. I have 2 Colt Ar-15's and a Ar-10 but thanks for your helpful feedback.

I will be using a Tig for this job. I'm sure you could use a mig very carefully and quickly then clean it up. However if I didn't have access to the Tig I probably wouldn't do it myself. I'm sure there are others that have though and they probably came out nice.

Well damn you for your TIG access!!!  I like taking pride in doing every single thing on my stuff, but it looks like I won't be able to do this myself.  I still may try to track down a TIG and just have my father supervise me so I don't F it up. lol

OP, why did you choose to go with a Black Hole Weaponry barrel?

I was talking to a guy that builds all of the rifles for the County sheriffs department and he recommended the Black Hole Barrel, Actually swore by it. However I have not seen many reviews on them so I may go with something else. Just got my Mega lower today and its nice. Been getting ready to pull the trigger on the upper and just about ready to do it then I saw the Noveske Afghan 14.5 on Rainier arms site. Oh my that thing is sweet. I could end up getting both lol. I am going to order a Timney 4lb drop in trigger this weekend. and maybe start putting the lower together next weekend.

I would recommend going with the Noveske, because like you I have not heard of anything from BHB.  This is the second Noveske barrel I have ordered.  The first one blew me away with it's accuracy.  You can not go wrong with Noveske.  This sounds a lot like my build.  I have a Mega Arms Mid Mono Upper, Noveske Fluted Afghan, but havae a SSA trigger instead.  Before you ordered that Timney trigger you may want to look here. The mono uppers come with a tube style wrench that fits over the barrel to reach the barrel nut.

DriveSector.

Noveske Stainless barrels aren't friendly with conversion kits like Adams Arms according to Noveske.   The N4 lite barrels will work supposedly.  Plus most Noveske Stainless come pinned.  Won't be able to put the pin in after the Barrel goes into the Monolithic.

OK someone used a AFGHAN barrel.... ok I got some wrong info somewhere

I don't believe Noveske pins their barrels anymore.  When I bought my Recon back in 2010 the gas block was pinned.  I bought an Afghan about a month ago and the Switchblock was not pinned.  If you go Noveske just know they tape the pin on the outside of the barrel packaging.  Do not forget that and loose it.  I have had pins from them that were straight and one that had a taper for easier installation.  Either way I suggest taking a dremel on low speed and tapering the pin more so it will go in easier.  If you do this it will not hurt it a bit and the pin will not dig into the barrel.  When I did my first install on my Recon I took the pin out after 6 months or so and saw that the pin dug into the barrel a small bit.  It did not cause any problems but it just a bitch to install the pin untapered.  I also suggest putting the pin the freezer for a few days so it will shrink.  Get everything read to rock and rool and then take the pin out of the freezer.  You will only have a few minutes to install the pin so don't fool around.

I did a build with an early Gen 1 rifle length upper.  It comes with its own barrel nut and a tubular wrench.  Assembly is very easy.
