I'm looking to my first AR.  I was looking at either CMMG or BCM.  They both fall into the range of my budget.  I've read good things about BCM, but haven't round too much on CMMG. So what are the thoughts on the two manufactures? What other manufacturers would you recommend and why?

Thanks.

If you have the option to obtain a BCM in the config that you want then I would do so. BCM is high quality at a reasonable price.  I haven't have any problems what-so-ever with my BCMs after a couple of yars. BCM has earned their reputation & a lot of business goes their way because of it. Good luck with your decision.

I have the CMMG LEP II 5.56 gas piston carbine.

Almost 1500 rounds thru it. Wall mart Federal 55gr FMJ, BVAC 55gr V Max, Barnes 55 gr Vortex TSX, and M855 62 gr - not a single problem.

Rifle is accurate enough for what it is. Gas piston make cleaning very easy.

I also have a CMMG .22lr top end that is a very good product as well. Id say CMMG is excellent quality for the money.

I have a CMMG upper, but given the choice between CMMG and BCM, chose BCM everytime. I have a Spikes Tactical middy upper it's nice, but BCM it just that little bit nicer.

BCM every single time between those two choices.  The two aren't even in the same league IMO.

With that said though, Daniel Defense also makes very nice rifles that would most likely fall within your budget.

Are you looking for a railed upper or standard hand guards?

I have started to look at the DD as well.  I'm looking for a rail.  I really like the DD M4 V5 and the BCM Recce.  I'm just a little hesitant to drop the money on these without ever seeing either of them in person.  I think both of them are pretty close and price and are in my price range for the rifle itself before getting into sights and all the other add-ons.

Would recommend starting with something more basic, and then figuring out what features are more important from there.  (i.e. standard iron sights, std hand guards or non-FF rail) The recce might not be the right choice for you.   Best thing to do is to get into something as basic as possible, and then go from there.  I'd recommend something more like a basic BCM M4 clone or the same thing in a mid-length gas system with A2 front sight post and either a carry handle or some other fixed rear sight.

Example: Wouldn't start with anything fancier than this...

But this would be what I think a good starting point would be...

CMMG makes some very affordable products and you would have a well-built rifle. What you save on CMMG can go to an optic. You will want an optic. Trust me. And a back up iron sight.

That being said, I think BCM might be the more accurate platform out of the two. You might find a lightly used one and get a good price on it through the EE here or hell a brand new one.

If it were between the two for me and it was my first rifle I would go with the BCM. I looked at CMMG before deciding LMT which is a good brand, too. I use a couple of 11.5" BCM barrels in my pistols and accuracy is more than acceptable. I'm sure if I could shoot better...

I just bought my son a Spikes middy through Aim Surplus for his first AR. I was impressed with the quality of this gun, not to mention a very reasonable price.
First rate! They always seem to be on backorder but definitely worth the wait. The secret must have gotten out and they get snapped up soon after they become available again.

Which exact rifles are looking at? CMMG and BCM make a couple of different variants with different features and price points.

For the money and features one of the rifles I'm very impressed with is the Rainer Arms RUC at $1,295.00 as advertised right now.  Daniel Defense has a few variants that are down in the same price range and aren't bad, but I think for the money the RUC beats them.

If you need to go below the $1K mark than check out Spikes Tactical.  I like mid-length gas systems with government profile barrels and if you read up on the mid-length vs. carbine gas systems I think you're going to come to the same conclusion.  If you really need to go low price than check out DSA as well.
