Hello
I'm new to the community and have a question about free float HG vs regular 2 piece HG
In a discussion with my father earlier he mentioned the potential issue of extra wear being incurred on a
free float HG due to it only having one point of contact. Has anyone had any experience with FFs developing
"play" in them over time as a result of use?

I have two sets of LaRue free floats neither of them have any play in them and have been used a fair amount. I have never heard of a problem with them causing wear or coming loose if properly installed.

Never heard that. A free float is secured to the barrel nut. It's actually better supported than the standard hand guards.
I gues if you are pounding nails with it, there could be a wear issue.

There's just not enough mass to cause noticeable movement and thus wear. Any of the good ones are designed to lock in place, not allowing movement, thus no wear.

It's not really one point of contact, since it's generally all the way around the barrel nut assembly, you have a cylindrical attachment that's pretty rigid. Even the two piece FF's like the DD Omega's are solid. Some not so much, but the good ones are.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys, keep it coming.
Does anybody have any opinion about UTGs free float quad rail for carbines?

I know UTG makes there products with cheap pot metal...

Really, you should look at something else, I am a big fan of the MCTAR series from Midwest Industries

EDIT: THIS  one is a two piece FF, all you have to do is cut the delta ring off with a Dremmel tool and bolt it on.

You could go the UTG route, but they're pretty heavy, not all that well made, and not usually to spec.  You would probably be better served saving for a better free float rail set up.

ETA:  I like Yankee Hill, never had a problem with them.  Midwest Industries is good stuff too.  Daniel Defense and Troy I've had good luck with also.

I would definitely NOT go with a UTG.  I like Yankee Hill Machine FF tubes.  Cheaper than some and have never had an issue with one.  If you don't need rails, get the DPMS or Model1 sales $35 versions.

In the free-float vs. 2-peice handguard debate, Free float wins every time.  More accurate (barrel harmonics), and more secure in my experience (I'm in the military and I hate the 2-peice KAC rails).

The UTG's are wide and heavy. They are buy no means the equivilant of better made rails like LaRue and Daniel Defense.
I used an older set. Never broke or failed but I would not use them on a serious rifle.

UTG Free Float Rail

You can't do any worse than UTG. In fact, running with no handguards at all would be better.

The Diamond looks G2G, never owned that one but YHM makes good quality products.

As a matter of fact the "scalloped" rails are the only product that YHM makes that I dont like, and that is simply personal preference.
