I am thinkg of getting another bolt or BCG for my AR.  I read an article form Mr Sweeny, can't remember his first name, who has published several books on AR.  I was in the local Barne & Noble Store while waiting for the wife and duaghters finish their shoe shopping.   In the article, he said the carrier will out last the barrell and recommend only getting an additonal bolt.  My question, will I be better served to keep a complete BCG assembly or several bolts?  I am in the process of getting spare parts for my rifle as my funds permit.   Thanks,

A bolt is maybe 50 bucks.  I think a decent assembly will be about 120.  A complete carrier is much quicker to replace than a bolt.  Just get a spare rifle.

If funds permit, get another BCG. As noted it is quicker to replace it if needed.
However if you are needing to travel light and want to make sure that you have parts
that fail most common, is parts that revolve around the bolt.
1. Bolt
2. Firing Pin
3. Rings (Even with a spare bolt, you still want to fix the old bolt)
4. Firing pin retainer
5. Trigger Spring
6. Hammer Spring
7. Disconnector Spring
8. Extra Trigger and Hammer Spring

These things listed above are cheap insurance if you are out in the field and something breaks or gets lost.
These are my suggestions and besides another rifle, this needs to be the bear minimum on spare parts IMHO.
Remember when a gun mal functions is when you are using it, and if you are using it to save your life or your family, you want to be able to change to broken part quick, and thats usually a part in the BCG, so just change out the whole thing. Then later on after the confrontation is over you can see what broke on the old BCG, if thats the problem.

The odds of you needing a spare carrier are slim, however, you never know, so I have one complete spare bcg per rifle as a precaution.

Have 12 rifles, 5 spare BCGs and an extra bolt. Can't have too many spares. Enough lower kit parts and spring kits for a couple more builds.

Make sure that you have a small tap handle and a 4-40 tap for tapping the rear take down pin spring hole in your lower recievers, not to mention a 1/4-28 tap to chase hand grip sdrew holes
