Thinking about getting a Spikes 10" rail for my LMT 10.5" upper, does anyone have this setup in a picture, or just a Spikes rail on their upper?

What was the big deal with the barrel nut? did it cause an issue? or did you just think it was shotting craftmenship. anymore info would be great.

well the first problem was it cracked when installing, spikes did send me a new one free of charge,
that one managed to get torqued properly and not crack, but the aluminum transferred heat to the rail really quickly,
after 60 rounds i couldn't touch the damn thing even with ladder style covers on it,
I put magpul's xt's on there, and that helped, I just wasn't impressed with it compared to DD, larue, or other offereings I have used in the past

I need to snap some pics, but I have one with the new SAR rail.  Isn't it a titanium barrel nut?  Mine came installed and it is SWEET.

What's the difference between the BAR rail and the SAR rail?  Besides the first letter.

Is the SAR an improvement/replacement of the BAR or is it being sold side-by-side.

Here is a pic of my 10.5” lefty with a 9” BAR rail if that helps.
I have 3 BAR rails and 2 SAR rails and love them all.

I never had a problem with the barrel nut on the BAR, but then again I read the instructions and used precision shims correctly so I never had to torque it above 50 ft-lbs as was intended… never had a problem with heat transfer either.
I guess if you disregarded the instructions and didn’t use the shims properly to time the barrel nut you could find yourself over torquing the barrel nut which would damage it, but even a V8 engine can be ruined by improper assembly of the components… That is called human error not a design flaw.

Daniel Defense uses an aluminum barrel nut on their M4, so does  YHM and many others… don’t really see the problem, but to each his own.

To compare the BAR rail to the DD Lite or LaRue rails is kind of unfair due to the fact that is in a much lower price bracket… it’s like $100 or more less expensive than either of those two and for the price it is one hell of a nice rail.
I mainly use the BAR when I am planning on using a suppressor that will be recessed inside the rail… for that application I see no better choice on the market.

If you have no plans on mounting a suppressor recessed inside the rail then I would suggest the SAR rail. The SAR is much more comparable to the Daniel Defense Lite rail or LaRue rail and in my opinion is a nicer rail.
I find it more comfortable in the hand and defiantly easier to install… it is more expensive than the BAR, but it is in a different league and you get what you pay for.

To be honest I would choose the SAR rail over any rail system that I have used to date as long as I wasn’t planning on using a recessed suppressor.

ETA: Pics

Here is a pic of a 12” SAR on my SPR build…

Here is a pic I borrowed from wjt1169 that shows the difference in the width of the rails.

I can't speak to heat transfer issues yet because I haven't been able to get out to shoot the thing.  So far, I just know that if "feels good" in the hand.

I have been looking all over for the Spikes SAR rail and i cannot find them on spikes website.  If anyone has a like for the 10" SAR rail that would be great if you could post it here.

Some more info for you.

12" BAR is 16oz. (479 grams)

12" SAR is 12oz. (340.19 grams)

There is apx. a 4oz. (113.39 grams) difference between the BAR and SAR (this works out for most lengths).

As an example of weight saving, going from a Government profile M4 barrel to a lightweight pencil profile barrel will only shave off apx. 2oz (56.69 grams).

The SAR rail has a Titanium barrel nut.

The BAR rail has an Aluminum barrel nut.

The SAR rail is apx. 1/2" narrower than the BAR rail.

The BAR has a 1.79 ID and the SAR has a 1.50 ID.

Both rails are made from the same 6061T6 material, same Type III anodized finish, both have scalloped rails, both have anti-rotation tabs. The BAR has 5 QD sockets, the SAR has 4 QD sockets.
