Hello, I am thinking of getting a free float hand guard for my carbine ar-15 rifle.  My question is i have heard about aluminum vice blocks you can put around the barrel to secure it and I am wondering if these would work to remove and install the free float hand guard or if the kind of action block you put inside the magazine port and into the vice would work as well.  I am new to doing this sort of work so if you can give me some insight i would appreciate it.  This link is showing the action block that you put vertically into the magazine port.  (Far right one) http://model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=603

I'd recommend getting the upper block as you can change barrel nuts if the rail you get uses a proprietary nut, which most do.

You don't want to use the magazine block.  Get the one that wraps around the upper.

What do you think about the aluminum vice grip deal that goes around the barrel?

Yep, got one of those and I coated mine in leather.  I only use it for flash suppressor installation and removal.
