Muzzle break, flash supressor, componsator, etc.....

I guess I just never had anyone break it down for me and this is one of the best places for information(atleast most of the time lol)

I just got my first AR15 and Im tryign to decide what(if any) changes I want to make. Ive seen many different things at the end of an AR15 barrel and I would really like to know what the benefits are. My range buddy said that I should get the AAC "Blackout" so that i can use his supressor on my AR15(which sounds good to me ) But I figured before I go out and start buying stuff I should have some more info.

The way I always understood it:

Muzzle brakes are devices intended to reduce recoil, usually by redirecting a portion of the hot gases that come from the muzzle using a baffle system.  During the glorious years of the Clinton Second Amendment Rights Infringement Bill, the term muzzle brake in the AR-15 world seems to have been applied to similar devices that were used more for maintaining a correct look to the rifle while avoiding the use of banned flash suppressors.

Flash suppressors are devices that are intended, primarily, to reduce muzzle flash.

Compensators are devices that I've always understood as being designed to reduce muzzle climb, like the Cutts Compensator on the Thompsons.

But theres no hard and fast rules to any of it, really.  For example the A2 flash hider has a closed bottom which both reduces the kickup of dust when shooting prone, and is intended to provide some compensator effect.
