Got an early POF piston operated upper and have a mechanical operational question. Are there only two parts to the piston system? One being the piston and the other being a long guide pin that pushes against the bolt carrier. Seems like there should be a return spring or something else in there. The pistion just flops back and forth making a clanking sound. Is this normal? Bought an ATI lower and want to use it with the POF upper. Thanks

From what I remember it has four parts. The piece that twists on and off that hold everything together, the piston itself, the piston guide rod and the spring that slips over the guide rod.  Turn the gun upside down and give it a couple of taps. Everything in there should fall out.......

There's no spring in there.  The guide pin will fall all the way into the upper receiver cavity about 4 inches.  Couldn't find any parts breakdown that shows what parts are supposed to be in there.  And yes there is an FAL style end plug that locks everything inside.

I emailed POF and they indicated they don't use springs in the gas tube.  The buffer spring is all that is necessary for it's function.  Thanks for the inputs.
