I bought a CMMG mid-length upper. It has a very well-made set of tapered guards on it but those things are FAT! So, at the gun show I checked out the Armalite tapered middy guards on guns for sale which are a little smaller, and ordered a set when I got home. I just put them on, and they're the right size and fit fine, but I have to tell you the CMMG guards are excellent quality - and a little heavier. Each guard has on the mating surfaces studs on one side and holes on the other so the guards snap together and cannot be separated by pushing on the side of either piece. They also are a very tight and secure fit, where the Armalites rotate about 1/8" either way. That's not a problem, just sayin'. Still, the new guards will stay on because of the better grip I can get on them and the smaller appearance. The damn CMMG guards assembly is 2.56" top to bottom on the big end - makes the whole gun look big. The new ones are 2.49" which doesn't sound like much difference but it looks like more.
