I always thought it had to do with installing the triggers when the guns had the pinned in sear blocks.

Well I just looked at a M16A2 vs my colt 6940 lower and it has to do with the sear blocks.

The old pinned in sear blocks, not the current "web" that Colt's have now.

ETA:  Like these.  They prevent the use of some aftermarket match triggers like Geiselle's.

ETA again:  This thread has pictures of the block that shows how it had a leg that came down surrounding the selector and would block the left side where the trigger tail goes.  Hence the Colt triggers have the left side of the tail cut off.
