| Any input on piston system would be great. Besides the fact that you don't need to clean as often. Thanks. |

I prefer DI for AR-15 / M16 / M4, don't think adding piston systems yields any tangible improvements.
Now a gun designed from the ground up as a piston such as FN SCAR & AK, well those are great weapons. If I was forced at gunpoint to select a gas piston system, I would go with LWRC. The "piston systems" section is a good place for more info. http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=3&f=126 |

I know there are guys that are resisting piston systems on ARs, but I really have to wonder if they are saying that after having owned a piston upper. I heard, "go buy a cleaning kit," or "run it wet like you're supposed to," or even "just add a couple of drops to the bolt every 500 rounds."
I was looking for a new toy so I picked up an Osprey kit. I installed it and took it out and ran 630 rounds through the carbine in a few hours. While shooting I noticed the total lack of heat in the upper receiver area. The bolt was always cool to the touch. When I was done, I also noticed the light coat of lube that I put on the bolt was still there and the bolt still looked clean. Tonight I decided to clean the rifle because I was bored. Cleaning the bore was business as usual, but I found that the chamber was unusually clean. I don't know why that is, but it was. I cleaned the bolt and the whole upper with one 3"X3" patch. No scrubbing with a brush or scraping carbon. Everything just wiped clean. I also found that the red sealant crap (Silver Bear ammo) that gets all over the inside of my extractor wasn't baked on like it usually is. That just wiped out too. To be truthful, I just see a downside. All I can say is that I'm sold. I won't say which system is the best, because I haven't tried them all. I do like the Osprey system because it leaves your options open with regard to choice of gas block. |
