I'm in the process of a long range target build. This gun will be just for fun at the range. Looking at distances between 300-400 yrds.  I really don't want to spend $400+ on a barrel. So I narrowed it down to 2 dpms barrels. The first being the 18" mk12 and their 20" Stainless barrel. I'd rather a 20" but the barrel is chambered in .223, where as the mk12 is chambered 5.56. My problem is should I go with the mk12 to get a 5.56 chamber. Or would it worth sacrificing the 5.56 for .223 to gain accuracy from the 20" barrel. All opinions are welcome, thanks.

I'm also building such a weapon.

Why are you limiting yourself to DPMS?  Or even 18" to 20"?

What twist rates have you looked at?

Why not the Wylde chamber?

The dpms barrel has a 1:8 twist rate which is what I was looking for. I'm not limited to dpms, it's just what I've found to be the best bang for the buck. I also wouldn't mind a wylde chamber, it just seems everything I find is over $400-$500. Also, I would like to attach a muzzle break, so the barrel would need threads.

I would definitely consider the barrels from RRA.  My experience with AR;s has shown DPMS and CMMG to give you the highest chance of a poor barrel

I recently built this rifle using a DPMS Mini SASS barrel, 18", mid-gas system, 1 in 8 twist, stainless steel, .  It is the same as their MK 12 with shallow flutes.  It regularly shoots at or below 1 MOA with handloads.  Pretty good accuracy for alot less $ than the "trendy" barrels out there today.  A good value IMHO.

Nice. I have read good things about their accuracy.

Personally, I would look at Sabre and WOA for stainless barrels.

Sabre and WOA are definitly nice barrels. I just wasn't looking to spend that much on a barrel if I didn't have to. But like I said I'm open to suggestions and appreciate all suggestions. I'm in no rush to finish the build I just thought DPMS would be a good option. I like the RRA barrels and price, it's just there web site states the are on indefinate backorder. I'm going to call them this week and see what the deal is on getting one of their barrels also.

Unless things have changed RRA and DPMS use the same SS barrel blanks from wilsons. Having said that RRA have an excellant rep for accuracy in their varmint type rifles.  I have had nothing but great accuracy in the three varmint weight barrels that I got from DPMS, with handloads they were all .5-.6 moa AVE barrels.  Even my DPMS LW build is gtg, 4moa aimpoint and silver bear ammo yields 2moa from prone at 100 yds.  I just built a 16" recce type using a Bravo recce barrel and with 69 grn handloads it is shootinginto the .4-.5 range with 16x scope and a crappy jard trigger I had on hand.  The Bravo barrels were on sale for a while, might still be.  16" or 18" SAM-R chamber, handlapped, threaded for FH in the $300 price range.
