| A friend is asking for advice on a complete upper. He found a possible good deal on a LAR upper with a 20 inch Wilson Combat barrel. How are Wilson barrels rated? I don't have any other info on the barrel. He didn't think to ask. Not sure if it's chrome lined or stainless, etc nor do I know what profile it is. |

Aha ok. That makes sense. Guess I've never looked closely enough at the two.
Update! I stumbled across a posting on 68forums and a guy was posting about his Wilson Combat AR. That got me to looking and it appears Wilson Combat does indeed make it's own barrels. Of course this could be barrel blanks they get and then finish them themselves. From their FAQ: What does Wilson Combat® do differently than other AR style rifle manufactures? Wilson Combat® utilizes only the finest parts for the manufacturing our AR style rifles. JP triggers, hammers and sears are standard. Wilson Combat® barrels are made to the most exacting tolerances. Each rifle is assembled and fit by a Master Gunsmith; our rifles are not made in assembly line fashion like our competitors. Finally each rifle is function tested before leaving our facility to insure flawless function. Which makes me ask....who is Bill Wilson? |

Only one of the best gunsmiths out there. He used to be a well known IPSC competitor and then got into building 1911's. There's a lot more history there, but that's for another thread.
His 6.8 SPC barrels use Douglas blanks Shaw barrels/blanks and DPMS barrels (Thanks Consructor/ARP - you are the most knowledgeable in the 6.8 arena) and are 4 groove, 1:11 twist, SPC II chambers. (Considered the best configuration by 6.8 folks "in the know") They are great shooters and priced great. I don't have experience with the .223 barrels. I did have a WC CQB and it was a great gun. Top tier IMO...and about as much as I am willing to pay for one. Wilson Combat 6.8 info found here. |
