| This is my 1st AR...alot of questions. What do you GURU's recommend for deer hunting, range, and home defense combo gun. Desire accuracy, but on a limited budget. |
| I have gotten a lot of friends into AR's and they all want the best with all the bells and whistles from the get go. I encourage them to by a base model and learn how to shoot with iron sights, dissasemble and reassemble well and then start buying add ons. Plus, that is why they are so fun. Playing around, trying different options is how you gain knowledge with this weapon. I would say buy a bargain bin rifle from CMMG or shop around for a good price on a stag, rock river or bushmaster. Once you have more experience with them, then you can pay the big money and get a lmt or colt or the like. If you want an all around hunting, defense and plinker, I suggest getting a carbine length; 16" barrel. I have hunted deer, pigs and coyotes all with my 5.56. If you save a little money and get a bargain rifle then you will have money for an optic, which will cost as much as the rifle. I eventually swapped out everything except the upper reciever, barrel and lower, but in doing so, I learned a wealth of knowledge. In the end, whether you spend it up front or by replacing stuff, you will end up with a lot of money invested. Might as well have gained the knowledge for free. |

As far as I can tell the Sportical doesn't come stock in 6.8. Only 5.56 and .308. .308 has plenty of power for deer hunting, but I wouldn't use 5.56 on a deer. Maybe on the scrawnier varieties found in the South, but not up here. True. Although we have some monster whitetail down south, most deer in TX are not your WI or KS deer. I wouldn't go trophy hunting with my 5.56, although with the right ammo and a well placed shot it would do the job. 6.8 would get a little pricey for plinking. I wouldn't do the Sportical. You can get a better rifle by shopping around. From what I have read on here, the CMMG bargain rifles have had great reviews. In TX, we have a website, www.texasguntrader.com, for face to face gun sales. No paper work or back ground check, just a code of ethics. Check to see if you have anything like that because down here a lot of people are hurting for cash and have been selling really nice rifles for well under their value. Nothing wrong with a used one. |

for home defense, i would assume you want a shorter barrel like a 16". in order to spin bigger bullets for hunting, you want a 1:7 twist. if you can reload, many different caliber options are available. i don't have monster deer, and 60g VMax tear the pigs up - i work on the premise of high accuracy.
for the best of all worlds - you may end up with multiple rifles/uppers. welcome to BRD. |
