im looking for a trigger for a AR im building, its going to be used for mostly for tactical shooting courses/ 3 gun style shooting. I 've read the trigger sticky at least 5 times over the last month, i've searched the last 30 days numerous times. but im still at a loss as to what would be best for me a single or 2 stage? I would like fast follow up shots, i've never shot a 2 stage, and dont know anyone that has one, but i really like the "click, boom" of a single stage.

i guess my questions are:

is single or 2 stage better for what i plan on using the gun for?

can a 2 stage be shot as fast as a single stage?

what would you recommend for tactical shooting?

*money is a concern, $200 max *

Why dont you run the stock trigger for a while?

Stock trigger + 500 rds downrange > SSA and no rounds downrange.

Bill Springfield 4# trigger job for $35 is the best money you will spend for a trigger.

i'd really like the SSA, but im worried about the 2 stage.

can i shoot the SSA as fast as a standard single stage? will it work well for carbine courses and the such?

this rifle is going to see alot of movement and action, not just plink. sorry for my ignorance be i've never shot a 2 stage nor know anyone that has one.

With enough trigger time (sorry couldnt resist ) you can make almost anything work well. If you arent sure if you need it I would have a hard time recommending anything else but practice a lot with the single stage to refine your skills. Of course if you did buy it and found out it wasnt for you you could sell it at your cost Im sure as they are very popular and not always in stock.

Try the Bill Springfield triggers. I use them in my rifles for 3 gun. I run the 3 # triggers with a stock hammer spring. If you're in the Austin area shoot me an IM and we can meet up and you can try one of my rifles out.

Order the Geiselle SSA, buy once, Cry once. You'll be happy you did. One of the best upgrades you can buy.

2 stage AR triggers are generally shorter in travel and reset than SA/DA handguns or Glock triggers.  Unless you feel completely handicapped unless you shoot a SA only handgun, a 2 stage AR trigger wont slow you down.  Shot recovery takes way longer than dealing withthe longer pull and reset.  That said you will notice a difference in pull length and reset with your price constraint.  If you got a Geissele and set it to minimum over travel and reset yo uwould not even feel the difference vs a singel stage when shooting fast.

I used my LMT with an LMT 2-stage trigger for a 3-day Magpul Carbine class this past summer. I absolutely HATED this trigger at the end of the carbine class. It was terrible for quick shot to shot drills (which was most of the class). I would have taken a standard DPMS trigger over that one any day. On the third day of the class I got a chance to run Travis Haley's AR for an hour or so. I couldnt believe how much faster I was with his trigger. It was smooth, crisp, and fast. I asked him later what he uses and he said it's JP trigger with the JP speed hammer. I have since upgraded my LMT rifle with this same setup and I love it. I'll save the 2-stage for the long range precision rifle. YMMV.

I put a J&P spring kit in mine, and I like it for just $10.00. I would put a spring kit in it, shoot it and then change it if you want to. I also prefer the single stage for speed.

hmm thats what i was afraid of with a 2 stage.

i do plan on carbine courses and 3 gunning with this rifle so i need to be able to pop off fast shots.

i guess its either a JP Trigger, Timney, Wilson combat, or geissele high speed

I have both a Springfield trigger job (utilizing a JP speed hammer with it) and an SSA. Maybe I'm different, but I feel I shoot just as fast with the SSA. I doubt too many people here are that good that there would be a significant difference in speed in a good single stage VS a good double stage. I think it comes down to the way you want the trigger to feel to you.

My standard advice is get a Springfield trigger job and it doesn't meet your needs, look for a more expensive alternative.
