Just picked up my first AR this weekend - XM15-E2S. I already have the bug to upgrade but I am confused in regards to upgrading the forearm. My gun didn't come with the "typical" iron sights that I see on most AR's. I only have, what looks like, a low profile gas block, sling clip and bayonet mount. I am itching to order a quad rail but have a couple questions. Would the existing gas block work with a quad rail. Or, will I need to install a YHM, LaRue, etc low profile gas block? Any insight would be appreciated.
BTW, this is not my gun, just one I found online that shows the same gas block. http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/4935/orig.jpg |

Go ahead and pop the appropriate length hand guard of your choice on there, it will fit. That gas block will be compatible just like anyone with a fixed sight on it. Don't forget to add a pop up front sight too... Thanks for the reply. I forgot a key piece of my goal - a rifle length free float rail. Something similar to a DD M4 12.0 http://www.danieldefense.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=24 Will that work with the exiting gas block or will I need to replace? Thanks again! |

Gas block is irrelevant, as long as you get the proper length it should fit, it retains itself the same way. Free float though, idk... |

I think the poster is asking about hand-guard/float tubes that cover up the existing gas block?
My gut feeling is no. I'm fairly certain the particular model you have is only intended to be out of the way of an all-optical setup, not to fit under longer handguards. You would probably need a special low-profile gasblock to install rifle length float tubes, however, CAR (6" long) quad rails will fit on like normal. While you're getting your new rifle all set up, inspect the gas key staking. My Bushy was staked, but got a few extra taps to be sure as it wasn't as solid as I've seen. |

Der_Hans, exactly. I'll order a new gas block then. :) Thanks for the heads up on the staking. I hadn't run into that yet. |

No problem Icant! Let us know how it goes!
As for the staking, just take a close look. Mine was less secure than I desired, so I dropped the bolt in the bench vise, padded with a cloth, got out the hammer and big ass flat blade screwdriver and touched it up a bit. |

You really don't need to spend money on a lo-pro gas block. Just take a dremel tool to the bayonet lug and a YHM spectre FF(or any appropriate lenght) tube will fit over it.
If you would just rather buy a lo-pro gas, than I'll offer to buy your bushy gas block good to see another fellow Bushy ORC owner |
