Not sure if  this is the right area to post, but is there a way to remove the castle nut without using a special tool i.e. channel locks? Any help would be great!

I used a small pipe wrench the first time I removed one (it mared it badly). Since I have the proper tools and spare castle nuts lying around. Go to the build yourself forum, lotsa of info there.

A pipe wrench is likely to at least mare the surface of the barrel nut, could very well mess it up enough you need a new one.  Even if you have another castle nut, what are going to use to tighten down the new castle nut without marring or damaging it?

Lots of companies sell a $7 spanner wrench just for the castle nut.

You can also try to use a punch on one of the spanner cuts in the castle nut, tap it in the direction of loosening it.  Never done it on an AR, done it with automotive nuts like that, it sometimes worked, sometimes it didn't, and there still the risk of slipping with the punch/hammer and dinging up or scratching the rifle.
