There are a few systems out there that i like LaRUE, DD lite and Omega...

Here's my "rail system"........

6/16/2009 9:35:38 AM EDT
[#2]
I currently have the following rails on different AR's:
-Vltor VIS
-Samson
-KAC RAS
-Troy Free float
-YHM Quad rail
-YHM Tube
-LaRue

They all have their pros and cons.. The best way to find out which one you like it to try them out.. It is cheaper if you find someone else that has them to look at..

Good luck.

I been thinking about getting one of those for a light mount, which one did you get and how do you like it?

I only have 1 right now but have owned multiples...

DD Lite - Like the monorail top, lightweight, oval shape is comfortable, rails aren't sharp, free ladder covers. Dislike special tool needed for installation
Troy MRF free float - Like 2pc design makes install easy. Dislike requires removal of Deltaring, not the lightest, rails are sharp w/o cover
YHM lightweight free float - Like inexpensive yet decent quality, works w/ Spike's SD fake can. Dislike heavy weight
DD Omega - Like easiest to install, doesn't require Deltaring removal, lightweight, continuous top rail, free ladder covers. Dislike doesnt have a complete monorail look like the Lite (I had to think of something negative haha)
Vltor VIS - Like true MRP, need a I say more? Dislike weight, inability to change rails/length, cost

I will only buy DD rails from now on.

Tried KAC RAS, DD Omega, YHM something or anothers ... I'll never buy anything but DD again.

The biggest selling point ain't the easy install (you only do that once so no big deal), it ain't that it's monolithic, and it ain't that it's not sharp.  Try carrying your rifle around all day and tell me why lighter is better

LaRue

ETA:
6/16/2009 10:34:14 AM EDT
[#11]

I prefer the LaRue 9.0 FF rail on my 16" midlength gas system carbine because of it's high quality and easy to install with regular handguard installation tools.

I installed my LaRue rails myself just using standard handguard installation wrench and action block, no special dedicated tools required like other brands.

For my CQB/ home defense M4gery carbine, I don't need free float rails for use on short ranges so I'm using a non-FF KAC M4 RAS rails.

The KAC are just drop in type rails but they have an internal mounting bracket that locks to the top of the barrel nut, so no movement at all like other typical two piece drop in rail brands.

If you're going to be installing the rail yourself I would recommend the type that are easier to install like the Omega and Troy, if you have the proper tools then the DD Lite and LaRue would be a good choice.

Eh? The Omega rail gives an unbroken monolithic upper rail...

"The Patent Pending Daniel Defense Omega Railâ„¢ system is the most exciting rail system to hit the market in years! The Omega Railâ„¢ is a free float rail system that allows the individual operator to easily install it with the provided Allen Key and requires ZERO modification to the weapon! The Omega Railâ„¢ features an integral QD sling swivel mount, with rotation limiter, and an uninterrupted upper rail platform. This light weight rail system is meticulously CNC machined from Aircraft Grade Aluminum and is Military Specification Type III Hard Coat Anodized. All the Omega Rail fasteners are military specification."

FWIW I have one Omega 7.0. I used to have 2, but sold one with the rifle it was on...

[#13]
My vote goes to the Troy MRF.  Doesn't require any special tools and its probably the easiest to install.  Continuous top rail, very strong and solid, not too wide in your hands (slightly oval), machined for QD swivels, all for a good price.

My next rail choice would be the DD Lite or Omega.

It’s a section of Weaver rail, I no longer have the Part Number. But one thing to look for, if you go his route, is to pick a rail section that is round in contour.

These fit nicely against the HG after the ribs in the area you want to mount the rail to have been removed.

I just put a Larue on my 6920 and have to say I really like it.  I've only owned this one and a Surefire M73.  I liked the surefire as well.  For a little of $100 it is a great quality rail.  I have another 6920 coming in about a month that I might put a DD on since I plan on leaving the FSP there.  I just don't want to remove the barrel again to install a rail.

have the YHM free float (regular) on my lightweight mid-length.

Seriously considering un-installing it for a much lighter version.

It was cheap but it is also heavy and its circumference is really wide.  I would prefer something lighter and smaller

Might want to consider a DD M4 Series (9.0 for use with standard FSB or longer for low-pro gas block).  One of the most lightweight and narrow/low-profile rails out there.

This chart with dimensions and weights of different rails is pretty nifty:  Rail Systems

I have a Troy MRF-EX.  It's a two piece 10" free float.  It's solid, easy to install and has a continuous top rail.  The only downside is that is is a bit on the heavy side.

i own all of the above, my current favorite is the DD Omega because of he width, they are skinny and i like it.   i like the feel of the DD Lites but the looks of the Larue, i love my CASV-EL but hate my VIS

BUT best for bang for the buck is YHMs,

I've owned YHM, DD, PRi and KAC, and in addition to those I've installed LT, and ARMS.

My favorite is the DD OMEGA. I Like my KACs for an authentic Navy build for for a light weight, solid build, with a continuous top rail, the OMEGA is hard to beat.

Which Troy are you talking about? The free float us a monorail look but isn't the easiest to install considering you have to remove/cut the delta ring off and it does not have a QD swivel pocket (there was a thread about this that concluded only the DI models do). Personally I didn't like the feel of the Troy MRF free float but the price is $100 less than DD so you do get what you pay for.

i love the look, weight and feel of my dd lite rail.  the only problem is that the threaded shroud that tightens it up is too thick and prevents some accessories from being able to hang over the upper if you have them real far forward.  they run into it.  my eotech 553 would not work at all with it.  i had to cut a groove in the rail to make it work.  i bought a 516 and it works fine tho.  i love my rail, but id get an omega if i had to do it again

I've got one of these and like it.  Cheap, monolithic top rail, easy install.

Other rifle has got a KAC (I didn't build it).  It might be a little more solid than the MI, but at the price of weight and front sight removal for installation.  That rifle's also got a pinned hider, it would be a bit of a pain to change.

I have KAC on my m4 clone......

I will not put rails on any other weapon again....unless the new .mil weapon system whenever it adpoted has a similiar setup ........

Rails are heavy, the edges are sharp, they are expensive, they require expensive rail covers...they upset the natural balance of the rifle...

Finially the magpul MOE has made rails obsolete unless you want to zero optics or lasers on them.

If you just want to have a VFG and a light the MOE is the way to go....Rails were designed to mount IR lasers on rifles unless you want to put a laser on they are not needed.

That was my thread.  The newer versions do have QD swivels, mine was an older model.

Yes, you do have to take off the delta assembly; however its a one time deal and fairly quick even without the dremel (as long as you don't want it in one piece).  With the Troy, it is worth not using a special wrench in my opinion since all it takes to reinstall/remove is a hex wrench.

I have the Troy MRF drop-in rails on my M4gery.  They are pretty light, prove good airflow for the barrel, and have been very solid thus far.  I had one screw go bad on install, but haven't gotten around to repairing the screw yet.  I haven't had time to shoot with it yet, but it doesn't appear it'll move at all or much.  My aimpoint is on the upper receiver, though, so even it it moved a little, it wouldn't be a problem.

Great rails, very similar to Troy.  Instead of a screw on the bottom holding the lower rail, there is a horizontal pin you can push out to release.  While I can't say for sure, the Samson is a bit lighter, but I have two different length rails to compare.

At the same time, they are more expensive by about $50.
