I was looking to build an upper in 6.5 Grendel but I just don't have the money right now to construct it. I understand that I can swap barrel, gas block, and bolt to make a conversion which would be a cheaper temporary solution. I don't know if changing barrels in and out causes any problems for the upper receiver so I wanted to get some opinions before I make a decision. I assume that a barrel change out and back would probably require re-zeroing.

Should I do this piecemeal and just change out barrels and bolts depending on what type of shooting I'm doing, or save up for all the components to build a complete upper? I have no pressing need for the 6.5 (other than maybe hunting), I've just got the bug to do it.

The AR isn't really designed to swap barrels daily. You will have to check zero after changing barrels.

If you can afford the new barrel assy, bolt, mags, and ammo, you should probably just spring for the upper too. BSW

Thanks. I guess I will buy it a piece at a time and build the upper in time for hunting season. It's hard waiting though
