I was cleaning the barrel of my RRA AR-15 today, and, after running several patches through it, I examined it with a bore-light. I kept seeing what looked like a sliver of something about a third of the way from the muzzle end. It ran about a third of the way around the inside circumference of the barrel, and it was definitely not part of the rifling - it was running opposite the spiral of the rifling. I ran some more patches with a light coating of oil and looked again. It was still there. I am wondering if this could be some kind of a flaw in the barrel left over from the manufacturing process. Any thoughts? Whatever it is, it does not seem to affect accuracy, as this rifle is very accurate. Thanks in advance for any info. EDIT: P.S. this is not a chrome lined barrel. It is just chrome moly. |
I had that thought too, because the location of this "strange mark" does correspond, approximately, to where the gas port is. However, I can't believe that is what it is because it looks a lot more like a scratch of some sort. I am aware that erosion of the barrel can and does take place near the gas port on older barrels, but this barrel has less than 200 rounds through it, so I can't believe it is barrel erosion at the gas port. Thanks to DBAR for the idea about a borescope. I'm going to look into that. |
