Couple questions regarding handguards...right now I have a metal free float on my carbine.  Looks and feels nice, but it interferes with my folding front sight (handguard sits too high) and it gets HAWT.  After two mags I have to let it sit for 10 minutes or I'll burn myself.

So my main questions are what handguards are good for heat, and how do you know how large it will be by the gas block?  I am also wondering if switching from a free float to a..."non free float" (what would you call it?) will have a noticeable effect on accuracy.  It's really just a plinker/SHTF gun, and I occasionally do some 100 yard shooting.  Right now the gun out shoots me, and I can't imagine the difference would be THAT large.

FWIW I was considering a quad rail handguard...right now it's a pretty minimalistic looking rifle, but since it's a plinker, I might "pimp it out" and throw on a tac light and VFG.  Quality is also a concern, but I don't need anything top notch.  Not looking for budget parts, but it shouldn't cost mroe then the rifle itself, either Any help for a n00b?

A FF tube isn't the best set up for maximizing heat disipation. Most if not all "tactical" type rails have many holes machined in them for this very reason. You don't have to use all the rails for them to be benefitial to your cause but a lot of folks say that they can't justify a quad rail because they won't be utilizing all the rail space. I'm not sure exactly what your situation is with regard to your gas block situation from reading your explanation but as long as you have a set up that will allow the installation of an end cap you can drop in a set of 2-piece non-FF rails or plastic handguards. You can also remain with the FF rail set up that extends over & past the gas block so you can add a top rail mounted front sight.

Most rail manufacturers will advertise what rails will fit over or behind certain types of gas blocks. If you have a low pro gas block that a rail will fit around you should be g2g with just about any FF rail manufacturer. BUT, obviously you will have to add a top rail mounted front sight. If you're wanting to keep a gas block with integral rail or one with a flip up sight already integrated as part of its design then you'll need the appropriate length rail for your particular gas system size. Read up, look at pics & you'll have it figured out. As far as heat goes, any rail that has aluminum heat sheilds or vent holes should serve you well. I'm not saying that the rail wont get hot. It just depends on your ROF & barrel contour.

If you have a SHTF gun then you should have a light & a sling mounted anyway so this should dictate a lot of your decision making & what type of set up you prefer to have for the situation. You trackin? Allow some room for expansion of furture accessories if you think you might be open to upgrades or add ons. Unless you have a precision match gun then a FF or non-FF should offer you negligible MOA differences IMO. Good luck,

Thanks for the advice!

The problem I have now with the gas block/handguard is that when the front sight is flipped down, it hits the edge of the handguard before it's fully closed.  If the handguard was slimmer (as in a shorted diameter) then that wouldn't happen.  Right now I have the front sight mounted in the opposite direction.  The gas block has a rail on, which I mounted the sight to.

I've seen that you can get rail covers for handguards, so I might just get a quad and cover up what I don't need.  I certainly don't want to be trying to grip the rails...I've done that before and it's not too comfortable.

I'm going to try and keep the front sight on the gas block to save some money.  One less part to buy, hopefully.
