I understand the advantage of the free float rail system and certainly can see the  ease of installing a 2 piece.  I noted in looking at pictures in the M-4 string that it seems to run about 3/2 in favor of the free-float handguard/rail system.

I did a search and couldn't locate a discussion of this topic to help choose between the two.  Especially in a carbine length barrel to be used primarily for semi-serious competition, is the hastle of installing the free-float worth it?

I have carbines with free float and non-FF designs.  I only really notice a difference in accuracy from a bench or at longer ranges.

So you need to ask yourself what type of competition shooting you will be doing.  If it is run and gun stuff inside of 100yds then a 2 piece is fine.  If you will be taking "precision" shots at 200-300 yds, then the free float may be of some use.

Also what type of sights will you be using.  If you are running a magnified optic you may be able to better take advantage of the free float.  otherwise the short sight radius, or the precision limitations of a dot in an optic may be limiting factors on accuracy.

With the right tools, its not a hastle at all.  Once you get your front sight post off that is.  I really like mine and am about to purchase another one.  It's not something you NEED but they are nice for future accessories.

Also there are a couple two piece free float options out there as well, that don't involve removing the front sight or barrel.

As this thread is ussless without pics, and I'm bored....

Older Yankee Hill Mid-length I modded to allow a regular front sight.

Don't forget about the advantage of less heat transferrence to your grip with a FF vs. a metal on metal 2-piece.  If you like to sometimes hold the handguard itself, that can be an issue after a lot of rounds downrange.

Ive got the best of both worlds with both my DD Omega, and my ARMS 50C. Both are free floating and 2 piece for an easy install with no mods to the weapon.
