So I'm thinking of getting a URX II, however, I realize that there are "special tools" required to install the part. Before perhaps paying someone else to do it for me, can any current owners give me a text description of the install process, or perhaps a link to some KAC PDF on the subject, given we have the necessary tools?

Thanks.

There was an old thread which had the directions up, but I dont recall which thread it was or how long ago it was. I think SMGLee posted the pics though.

If you were a team member (click here for info)

I could give you this LINK

Sorry,

Did the membership get more expensive? Thought it used to be less. Don't know if I want to pay $24 for an installation guide, but thanks anyway.

Know anything that is "public domain," perhaps posted on some other forum?

I'm not sure I understand...
You're willing to pay hundreds for 1 time use fore-end tools, but won't pay less than
25 bucks for a membership that gains you disturbing amounts of info? Silly rabbit.

yeah, like $500 for both of the required tools....and that's if you can find them in stock.

pay to have it installed. it will cost you much less in heartache and grief, let alone tools.

GhostRing:

Where did I ever say I was going to buy the tools? I was just asking for knowledge, *assuming* I had the tools.

While I appreciate your suggestions, and take them to heart, I did not create this thread with the intention of discussing whether or not membership to arfcom or the KAC URX tools are "worth it," as everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
----

Like I said before, I am probably going to pay someone to do it. Luckily, someone helped me out and I have the KAC literature.

Thanks all for replying.

Wow, they actually tried to extort you into a member ship. Go to Operation Parts, you can at least look at the tools in the KAC section.

Extort?

I was just telling him that the info he needed was in the archives... You have to be a team member to view the archive (no secret)...

Extort is a strong word... and I take exception to it!

You're correct. It was a bit dickish.  I hope you can let it go. I would like to see the stuff to you know, I just want to know everything. I hope we are cool.

URX tool that I bent.... Set at 60lbs on the torque wrench was too much. Steel is a bit stronger than AL...teeth slipped off the barrel nut and the bent side got stuck between the barrel and rail. Id love one of these made out of a good tool steel.

Wow, our URX tool is WAY bigger than that. Mine looks nothing like that in fact.

No its not an "official" install tool. It was just something to make things a little easier.

The "silvery" looking wrench pictured above is a prototype of our (KAC) newer URX barrel nut wrench that is designed to work with an alternative URX barrel nut.
As some of you know, the original URX barrel nut was a "castle" type and requires a long tubular spanner type wrench as shown in SMGLee's posted instructions.  Use of this wrench also required removal of the gas block any time the nut needd to be turned.
This newer prototype nut & wrench combination does not require gas block removal, once the new barrel nut is installed on the host weapon's barrel.  Thereafter, all one needs is this type of '"silvery" type wrench which is used with a standard 1/2" breaker bar or torque wrench.  Howwver, one still requires the URX vice jaws to align and support the upper receiver assembly during wrenching.
I have not had time to re-do my instructions (as posted above by SMGLee) showing this prototype URX barrel nut.  In fact, it would be premature to do so, since that nut and wrench are still in the prototype stage.

Are they going to be made of steel?

So, quick question after having looked through the installation instructions.  After the URX is installed, the lower rail can be removed and reattached at will by the end-user?
7/7/2008 9:37:32 PM EDT
[#25]
Yeah, sure. If you have what has become known as the URX II, just remove the screws from the sides of the rail, press the detent at the bottom of the rail and slide the lower rail off. If you have an older URX I, everything is the same but there is no detent. Its a sweet rail with a few features no, or very few other rails I have seen offer.

Thanks.  I'm beginning to see the light!  But, one more:  the URX will work with heavier profile barrels right?

Sure, it will work with an HBAR. Probably not a bull barrel.

Thanks again.  It's amazing how much info is here if you're interested or paying attention.  The URX is a perfect example.  I bought one last year because I had the cash and the opportunity presented itself, but without much knowledge of the article or how it worked.  It's been sitting in storage until recently and I'd pretty much been gaffing it off and even listed it in the EE.  But, now with a little reading and a few questions asked, I realize it actually fits the bill for one of my projects very well.  Now I just need to get somene to install it for me.

Seems that between you and chromeluv, you guys have more "luck" than everyone else combined

But seriously, what did you guys do, sign deals with the devil.

Don't worry, got a couple E3's on order.  One is gonna be an sbr that will "try" to rival yours.  Just don't know if I can afford to try that type of build right after getting them.

chrome is selling a bunch of his KAS stuff off... I cant believe it but its true.

I won my mid URX with front sight in a KAC picture contest on another site. Collecting that gear over the last 6 or 7 years finally paid off. I think I won just by sheer volume of KAC stuff I posted!

May be true, but I saw the pics and they were good. I am starting now because they hold a special interest to me, more than other companies, and never a better time.  Can't believe chrome is selling all of that too!  You just better never get rid of the nice rigs you have.  They are one off's that people can't replicate if they try.  Lots of goodies.  Gave me a lot of inspiration.  Ar's used to just be tools.  Now I understand why mechanics always have the brand of tools they used.  Cause their nice too!
