I have a couple of SE Vortex flash hiders, and one is cut slightly shorter than the other and won't mount flat against the shoulder of the barrel. It leaves enough of a gap that a crush washer would fill the gap. I was under the impression that these were not supposed to use washers as there is nothing to index. Anyone know if the one flashider was made to incorrect dimensions or did they make two different versions?

Thanks!

They are not supposed to use crush washers.  There is a counter bore in the back of the FH that is supposed to cover the shoulder on the barrel where the threaded portion of the barrel meets the unthreaded portion.

Are you sure you have two different FHs, or do you have two different lengths of threaded portions on your barrels?  It is unclear whether you are talking about one barrel, or two.

If only one barrel, I would send the FH back to Smith Enterprises.  You don't want to use a crush or peel washer if there is any counter bore at all because of the lack of surface area on the FH.

There are "knockoffs" of the Vortex out there. The one that doesn't fit correctly might be a fake.

Is the Vortex that leaves a gap new or used?

If it was previously mounted with a washer and had some rounds fired through it, some carbon will build-up on the unused FH threads. If that FH is re-mounted without a washer, you'll encounter resistance when the barrel threads encounter the carbon build-up.

Not sure what to make about one being shorter than the other. Hmmm...

I have two different barrels and two different Vortex Flash Hiders... one of the flash hiders is physically shorter than the other, and the difference is about the thickness of a crush washer. I will have to break out a caliper and measure the difference, and probably post a pic of them side by side. I tried the one I am having issues with on both barrels, and it doesn't seat flush with either barrel, so its not the way the barrels are cut for the FH. I am currently running both LMT and SDI barrels, and previously had it on a Colt barrel, so none of the barrels should be out of spec.

There is a possibility its a fake, but I am pretty sure I bought it from a well known dealer here on the forums. The only difference between the two is one has the groove cut on the back portion of the body to mount a blank firing adapter on it... other than that they both have the tines cut similarly, and it is obviously well machined.

I may check the threads on the one to see if there is any carbon buildup that may be causing the issues, but I think I had this problem when I bought it new and just put the crush washer on to fill the gap.

I may contact SE to find out the deal.

I have one mounted to a Colt AR and it has a gap so I put a crush washer. I have shot the rifle since with no problems. Advice? Is this wrong?
