I want to try to keep it under 750 or so, and I really don't know that much. This is my first AR-15, and first gun really. I know what brands are good and such, but I don't know what type of upper to purchase. It just needs to be functional, not pretty. It is going to be one of few SHTF guns in my collection. I will be putting a scope on it eventually.

You can get a complete LMT upper for $615, then all you need is a rear sight.

16" LMT Upper - minus BCG. Don't use the option to add one from this page.  They will give you a CMT BCG, not LMT.

I would +1 going with an LMT upper.  A very good choice.

Boy, there's alot to choose from. I would suggest you take at least a week surfing this sight to gather info. You could buy an upper from $400 on up. How much do you want to spend VS. how much do you need to spend. If you don't have a problem with used equipment there's the EE (equipment exchange).

For my first AR, i'd prefer brand new. After that I might look at used ones

My third upper is a Sabre Defence Middy from PK Firearms.

IMHO might be a better choice over a carbine  if you are looking to put a scope on it

Sabre middy is a great choice.  LMT is a great brand, too bad they don't offer a middy.

You can get a Rock River or a nice Stag upper for under or around 500. Really depends on what you want.

I have to agree.  I am up to 10 AR's now and 5 of my uppers came from PK.  Those guys are great.

2 Sabre middys and 3 LW Bushys.

The last time I talked with M-A parts they started using LMT uppers for their builds and Wilson match barrels. This was in May. Their prices are pretty good and I have never had a problem with any of their stuff. Some people don't like to deal with them because Doc is a little rough around the edges.
