I am hoping that I can get some to chime in as to what brand to get and why.
It seems that just when I think I have found the brand for me another company comes out the what they claim is the best.
I was almost sold on the P.O.F. when I was told that their product had a few problems and that it was made outside the USA.
Next I found the Adams Arms but I have been told that the replacement staked key could pose a problem.
Can someone give me some real life experience on the many different gas systems?
I would prefer only buying from a "civilian friendly company" not a company that that makes it very difficult for us non LE or MIL. people to buy.
Thanks for any help.

I love my LWRC.  Many people consider it the best system after the HK.  In some ways it is better than the HK system.  Its at least another you should look into.  I have one and love it.

I'm gonna stick with none and let the competition play out. No point in getting something you cant get off the shelf replacement parts for.

You can get off the shelf replacement parts for everything but the carrier and the piston components themselves.  Never heard of the piston parts or a carrier wearing out so the replacement parts issue is not a valid concern IMO.

You cant get off the shelf replacement parts for most optics either... do you not buy optics?

I like my Ares Defense piston carbine kit.  Easy to install and has functioned perfectly through 700 rounds.

Thats apples and oranges buddy boy. Read the Ares conversion kit thread and I seem to recall the piston was either out of specs or the material ended up being too soft.

Scopes? BUIS?

Yeah, thats an Ares.  I have a LWRC.  Not concerned with that AT ALL.  I do not feel its an apples and oranges comparison.  Both a piston and optics require you to return to the factory in the rare case that something is wrong with a part.  In a worst case scenario (cant purchase new firearms) I could convert my piston back to DI.  I cant convert a broken Aimpoint into a traditional scope no matter what I do.

Perhaps your logic is flawed becasue you think that the Ares kit and LWRC are equally likely to have issues... they are not.

myitinaw, are you law enforcement? It is my understanding that the Osprey is only for sale to LE or Military.

Does anyone have any info on the Adams Arms unit?

I posted this a short while ago:

______________________________________________________________________________

There isn't a whole lot of information out their concerning this new conversion. Seem's to be some speculation about the BCG tilting, and a lack of a replacement gas key. Some have stated that the system uses the bolt carrier's key. I wanted additional information, and did receive a prompt reply from Osprey Defense. It should be noted that the Osprey YOUTUBE video showing assembly doesn't make mention of a replacement key. I for one will be trying this new system out. Price is said to be $300.00 from what I've read.

Here are three responses that I received from Osprey.

Our first iteration of the OPS-416 Gas Piston will be designed to work with CARBINE length fore grips, with barrel lengths between 10" and 16" (one-size-fits-all), and for .223/5.56 ONLY. However, a full length and a Mid length version will likely become available at a later date (not sure exactly when yet).

We will supply an alternative gas key with each gas piston system (includes also 2 new gas key screws). We highly recommend using our key as opposed to your existing key as ours is designed to last basically forever, but also our key will essentially eliminate the "bolt tilt" issue by way of its design and how it interacts with the op-rod. Your existing gas key "can" be used with our piston system, however you will likely shear-off your gas key screws in short order due to the forces of impacting the gas key with the op-rod.  Your current standard gas key and screws were never designed to handle those kinds of shearing-forces created by the op-rod/piston system.

Hope that helps clear things up. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions.

and

You will not need your gas rings any longer when using our system

They will become available for civilian purchase in June.
