Other than personal preference, is there any difference between this kind of buttstock

IMHO, the bottom one is much better.  I have a CTR one my Colt, make sure you order the appropriate model based on your buffer tube spec's- commercial or mil-spec.

CTR does not wiggle and has better ergonomics...as in more comfortable/better cheek weld.
