So say I buy a flat top upper thats got an A2 flash hider on it and the standard FSB. I decide to install a free float rail system. There ARE systems on the market that only require you to cut off the delta ring, and then mount it over/on the barrel nut correct? So you don't have to remove the flash hider or the FSB. I know the answer to this question is yes. I see the proof in the "Do it yourself" thread and instructions from certain manufactures(like Troy and MI). I'm not really trying to start a shit storm, but this weekend while I was at a gun show I was looking to buy a certain upper. Anyways, one of the main employees (with the company) said he didn't know what I was talking about and said he had never heard of such a thing. All the time not looking me in the eyes while he fed me what I know was a pure lie. Simply put, if you all tell me I'm right, I'll spend my money somewhere else from now on.

FF rails do exist that do not require the removal of the FSB or FH.

Yes, there are GOOD rails that don't require removing the front sight base.  Lots of guys sitting behind the counter at retail stores don't know what they're talking about.  If they did, we wouldn't be here.

The thing is is was one of the main guys from a vendor/company here on the boards. Even I knew(when I talked to him) that what he told me was incorrect. I would hope he did too.

Sounds a little suspect, to be sure.  I'm pretty trusting of the banner companies.  Once a company here does something questionable, it usually spreads here like wildfire with enough anecdotal back up to support the initial claim.

Are you sure you articulated your point correctly?

Now spit it out.  Who and when and let's see what experience others have had.  The vendor is sure to participate in the dialog.

Man I hate to see this start back up. I said he said we seem to never get the right answer.

I'm not going to name names(feel free to IM me though). My father and I were there, and I was looking for an upper. I had asked them about getting a low profile gas block put on it. He said that it would ruin the look of the barrel, and he didn't have the tools to do it there anyways. Something about the finish not being under it and the the pin holes under the FSB not being right(I'm not 100% sure on what he said here). So then I asked him what it would take to put a FF rail system on at a later date. He told me I would have to remove the flash hider and the FSB. Then I asked him about the systems that didn't require doing that. That you simply cut off the delta ring and they attach onto the barrel nut. He told me he wasn't aware of anything like that, while the whole time never looking me in the eyes. I knew he was 1. Either lying or 2. Didn't keep up with things. And, after looking, they sell the Troy FF system that doesn't require you remove the FH or FSB in their catalog.

Maybe I made a mistake in posting this, but what I put above is exactly what happened. I just wanted to make sure I was right on this one. Regardless, either he lied to me or just doesn't keep up on newer products. And maybe thats not his job, to keep up with things like this. Thats perfectly understandable. Again, just wanted to make sure I had my info correct for a future purchase.

the DD omega rail, that I have on my rifle it a two piece free float. You don't have to cut the delta ring off, or take off the fsb. The Vltor CASV is another one that you don't have to cut anything, or remove anything for a free float just to name a few more. Sounds like you talked to a douche bag

Oh I know, I didn't take it personally. To me, spending $500 on something is a lot. The only thing I ask is that the person be strait with me and know what they are talking about. If I feel or find out they are not, I'll take my money elsewhere.

I just finished building a stainless dissapator with a Midwest Industries free float tube and even though the barrel I used had nothing on the thread yet you certainly wouldn't have had to remove it or anything else except the delta ring assembly to install it and it looks hot with that stainless heavy barrel showing through all the vent holes. I build from scratch so I never install a delta ring set up in the first place, but that is all that you would have had to remove to install this sweet floater. As I read later in your discussion, one thing stood out. You do not want to install a gas block or any sight base over the barrels finish. Check out Midwest Industries web sight, they make some nice stuff. Have a great day.

Simply put, there are some people who don't know sh!t.  Gunshops, cofee shops, cop shops, used car lots, even at the natonal confrence of whatever-your-interested-in, there will be those people there who simply don't know what their talking about.

Now in all fairness, there is a lot to learn out there, and no one person can know all things.  There's just too much to know.  A person who works for a car company may not be very interested in cars at all, they are just there doing their job.  Getting told that there were no Corvettes before '63 (they know this cause that's the OLDEST car Dad always wanted) should bring a smile to your face... Not a suprized expression.

Just wait till you start reading "experts" in gun mags who believe that M193 won't work in a new 1/7" bbl, and then post accuracy results thru that 1/7" using m193 in the same article.
