I don't understand what makes some of these free float handguards from unscrewing.  The lack of explanation on retailers' websites doesn't do much to convince me into buying one.

I know there's a sticky'ed thread in the "Build It Yourself" forum, but it only covers three different types, and two of them are obvious in how they don't unscrew - the LaRue and Troy, because they lock against the upper receiver.

Is there any more information on other types and brands of handguards?  I don't feel comfortable buying some of them because of lack of confidence, even though I realize that's more of a result of marketing.

I have no clue what half of the internet slang on here means, including "RIF."

Reading Is Fundamental
I reread your original post and had to edit mine.
eta: you have 2 types that I'm familiar with.
Screw on against the receiver and a locking ring type. Not sure about the third one
