Just buy an A2 Lower in the brand of your choice and shop around for an upper either custom built or direct from a manufacturer.  I believe Bushmaster will sell 1/7 govt profile A4 uppers.

If you want a Colt upper they can be found but are usually overpriced from places like Autoweapons.com or Fidelis firearms.

Here is the A4 on autoweapons site under Colt.  He wants over a grand for it.  Sad thing is people will pay him that kind of money for it.

Been thinking about a future A4 build myself. Assuming I want a Colt upper and lower, what would be the best lower to go with?

I have one built using last year's Bushmaster tax time upper with a 1x7 gov't barrel.

Speculation was they were overstock after supplying the Iraqi Army.

If you wanted a nice complete upper to build from, the CMMG is an excellent choice.

This is a total Frankengun built from spare parts and pieces I got from the EE. I think all I paid new price for was the ACOG.

RRA Lower
Assorted internals
Armalite A2 stock
Old Magpul marked Ergo
Bushmaster flat top upper
KAC 300m rear sight
TA31RCOA4
KAC M5 RAS
Colt Govt Profile barrel
KAC vert Grip
SF M951P
HK mag with Magpul
Magpl trigger guard

Sir, you can probably build a gun and deviate from what an A4 really is quite a bit without someone saying it isnt an a4. However, I think you at least need a flat top, a 20" barrel and a fixed stock.

One last thing to the original poster...

I noticed your tagline refferences the Five Seven. Maybe you are an FN fan? If so, here's an FYI:

FN is supposed to show a line of commercial market AR15's at the shot show this year. I cant dont know anything other than I read it in an industry magazine that has so far been pretty credible.

As the source for millitary A4's, maybe they will release a commercial one? I dont know.

A commercial A4 from FN? That would make me spend $1800 (FN pricing ) so fast the windows in my bank would implode.

I want to buy an A4 clone.Unfortunately Colt and FN don't offer them for sale to civilians.
Would a CMMG Gov't Model be my best choice?
I want the best available without having to build it out of parts.
Would my dealer get a better price from CMMG than I can?
Any advice appreciated.

I love mine

I looked at the link you posted, the front sight is "F" marked? Maybe Im wrong, but I thought the F marking was only for carbines? It was my understanding that the whole F front sight base was to indicate a taller front sight base. The reason it is taller is to account for the difference between the full length sight radius and the carbine. If I am correct, a F front sight would be too tall on a rifle length gas system.

Can anyone confirm or correct this info?

I was under the impression (however uninformed it may be) that the F marked front sight base was necessary due to the differences between the A2 fixed carry handle and the detachable carry handle and there being some slight difference in hight (between the two)the required the different front sight base.  It that is the case than the M4 and the A4 would both benefit from the F marked front sight since they both have the detachable carry handle.

The Detachable carry handle does not have as much elevation travel due to the mounting method and the A2 has more travel up and down designed into it because it can travel deeper into the upper receiver.

The detachable carry handle elevation can only move up and down within the mechanism built into the handle which is more shallow than it would otherwise be in the standard A2. And due to the nature of the mounting method the detachable carry handle rear sight sits slightly higher.

(once again a wild ass guess due to uninformed internet rumor content)

Essentially after all that typing the F marked front sight bases are for use in conjunction with flat top uppers. M4's, A3's, and A4's and not for use with A2 standard carry handles.

My version..

Built from parts (EE)except the lower.

My plan was to use Bushmaster parts; They dont offer an assembled upper in the catalog, but do free gunsmithing on any of their parts......

The fact that they will be delivering them to the Gov't in the future makes it even better...

Otherwise, the idea was to find a post ban Colt flat top rifle and switch out the barrel with a Colt A2 barrel...

The whole F marked front site base doesnt seem to bother me, since I didnt plan on using Irons anyway.

Bushmaster makes a great A4 IMO, when they do their special run 1/7 gov't profile barrels.  Here's mine (sorry for the feet):

F marked FSB is not needed.  I have 6 Bushmasters of barrel lengths from 14.5-20" with the standard FSB and flat top uppers that have all been no problem to zero at 50m.  The posts are not turned out of the FSB's.  People make way too big of a deal over "F" marked FSB's, IMO.

I built one using an RRA lower. I found a saber defense upper 1/7 chrome lined which came with a Knight's M5 ras installed:

If you are a CMMG dealer... sure.
