What are the ways to check headspace on barrel that is not installed on a rifle? Does it have to be by a gunsmith with special tools or is it something I can somehow check at home?

Headspace gauge is the only way to accurately check. Brownell's, a site sponsor, sells them reasonably.

The first thing that comes to mind are the go and no go gages that you close the bolt on. Is this what you are referring to?
