I am considering a 20 inch ported barrel on my varmint build, are there any draw backs to the porting?

Never seen ported barrel before.  You might be better off getting an effective muzzle break.  You'll have to wear hearing protection though as they do get loud.  Some breaks are extremely effective in taming recoil.

Just install a Smith USCG brake.  You will not need to port your barrel.

I think he's talking about a bull barrel that wouldn't have a threaded end for a break. I know that J&T offers an option for ports on there bull barrels. I haven’t ever shot a bull barrel with no ports before so I wouldn’t know if adding ports would help in theory ports should help with muzzle rise and follow up shots.
