Thinking about doing an SPRish build in the near future, next 3 mo anyway. Something that would work for walking varminter and casual steel banging to say 500 yds. Was leaning towards a WOA spr barrel 1-8, wylde chamber, assuming they are of good quality in relation to accuracy. Am open for other suggestions on barrel though, limiting factor cost (300). I am a little confused on the forend right now, I don't need a railed forend for my purpose and don't want the hassle of having to buy rail covers or bipod adapters to make a raild forend work. Not like I am going to hang 15 devices off of this rifle, other then a bipod or my offhand. I have thought about a basic FF tube like DPMS, nice price+. Are the badger handgaurds any good, no one ever talks about them. They appear to be gtg as far as mounting a bipod or shooting off bags or offhand. Are they junk? How does the square tube mount to the barrel nut? Is the barrel nut square or trapezoid shape? The only thing I see at the rear of the BO's handguard is a screw on each side, is that all that holds the forend to the nut? Also plan to put buis on ths upper, jeesh haven't used open sights in awhile. Thinking something like the YHM flip-up gasblock and one of there rear flips? Optics will be mild 2-7 or 3-9. Any opinions about these parts are greatly appreciated as I am a AR newb
Look at the RRA Varminter or Predator Pursuit upper. Both SS barrels, 1/8 twist with a Wylde chamber and capable of shooting better than you. A complete upper can be had for under $600 if you look in the right places. Ditch the BO handguard idea as the flat bottom is good for a rest, but not in your hand. Either RRA upper come with railed gasblock which will allow for BUIS down the road.
I had thought about a new upper, but I've got a good a3 upper laying around with a bolt and carrier. The predator pursuit barrel isn't a bad Idea though, more food for thought. The flat bottom on the BO handguard wouldn't feel too strange to me, pretty used to shooting a McM a5 stocked rifle and a B&C medalist. Both of them pretty square bottomed. Not for sure if the RRA could outshoot me or not, never tried em. Course never really had a gasgun that would outshoot me, but never had a gap ar10 either. If my tuned bolt guns don't do better then .35-.4 AVERAGE, then I'm let down.
